In this Doordash, uber eats & grubhub video, I talk about customer tips from a doordash driver prospective.
Should customers tip a percentage of their order's cost, or should they tip us based on the amount of time we spend delivering their food?

Ty for talking about this. Its an important topic for people to be aware of. Im definitely all about distance/time based tips. And no tips below 3$ are acceptable

People should tip if they choose to. Their money, their decision.

It should be based on the time we have to wait for orders to be ready once we get to the restaurant and how far we have to drive to their house from the pick up

Thanks for the great content Zach. Frank Borello my market is Staten Island nyc. Appreciate all the tips and tricks…… and the healthy dose of humor! I’ma retired EMS LT, doing gig work to stay busy and make a little $$$

Yup. We have to look at the offer and decide if its worth it or not. The only reason i would take a short low offer is if it was the end of my day and i only needed a few bucks to make my quota for the day. Thats it!

Hi Zach, I don't think most customers think of all those factors. I think they tip based on their ability and current mood! I could be wrong! No rhyme or reason most of the time! Plus, I don't think that most customers think of the drivers...they're thinking about themselves, unfortunately.... and their empty stomachs! There are exceptions and great customers. I definitely think drivers just need to choose orders that benefit them ...period! ...and not waste time trying to figure all this out! Too many variables and scenarios! As drivers, we just have to work with what we get is the bottom line...and yes, cherry pick! It seems like it's all just educated guessing with apps and customers!!!!

I'm a customer and I was always just picking the highest of the 3 tip suggestions on DD because I assumed the suggestions were fair. I've recently started to look at the mileage to make sure that I'm tipping at least $2/mile and sometimes the highest tip suggestion is not that so I manually change it. I think DD could make it more likely for drivers to get better tips if they raised their tip suggestions for people that just want to push a button and not do math.

Good video Zach.

I personally prefer being tipped based on the distance that has to be traveled.

Usually, I'm always able to fit the entirety of a door dash order inside of my vehicle. Since I'm used to doing instacart, I have not seen a doordash order bigger than any instacart order that I have done. Therefore, I'm not too worried about the size or the amount spent from a customer when it comes the door dash.

However, it does matter by distance since I'm trying to obtain no less than a dollar per mile for each order. The longer the order, the more tip that I prefer.

Just signed up for grub hub, adding a third app to my hustle now! Next week it will be 4th with flex.

My standards are at the very least a $1 a mile but even then not guaranteed. Sometimes I’ll get close to $2 a mile but if it takes me far away from hotspots during peak hours, I’ll decline unless it’s really a big order.

Usually it has to be above $7 unless it’s less then 2 miles.

I personally live in a rural area and the only pizza place that delivers is 4 miles from my house. I tip $8 no matter what size the order is. My average order is around 15 to 20 bucks. If I ordered more than$50 I would probably throw in some extra cash for good service.

I would like these apps to show the mileage and estimated time to the customer. We have a good amount of control over the wait times and with experience we know when to reject orders. I'd much rather see tips based on mileage.

Hi Zach! Hmm, an interesting dilemma. My immediate response is whichever pays me the most but I know that's also a selfish way to look at it, and one I wouldn't like from the customer side! I think, if I had to pick one, I'd want it based on time. For example, tonight I took a Taco Bell order. Decent pay for low miles, I figured why not? Get there, lobby is closed. Okay, well the drive-thru is low volume, I make the 3rd car in line. 10.Minutes.Later...I pull up to the order speaker, tell them what I'm there for. "Okay, no problem, we have it ready to go." Alright, great. I'm annoyed but whatever, let's get it and go. After issues apparently with both people in front of me, and then having the wrong drink which had to be remade after handing my phone through the window to confirm I wasn't lying, that decent money order for Taco Bell ended up being such a waste of time. I could have done 2 McDs in the same time and I hate the golden arches, so that's saying something.

The thing is? Was that the customer's fault? No, not really. It wasn't mine, but the restaurant. So while I want to be compensated for the time it took me, not just the 1.5 miles driving, it would be hard to calculate that ahead of time, and would it be fair to charge the client after the fact? So I don't think there is an easy, or hard and fast answer, truly. I wonder how a mandatory tip system would work or higher base pay. At the end of the day, drivers should be compensated fairly based on the factors THEY have control over while being able to make a fair wage.

Most customers don't want to tip. Customers only want their foods delivered ASAP. Customers don't care that the drop off locations are hard to find. Customers don't care about the distance the drivers have to drive.

As a driver I'm just going to say that I really don't care about the size of the order. It's just the amount of work for me. I will happily accept a $7 order for a single bag from mcdonald's, and maybe $9 for $100 worth of food with drinks. Because at the end of the day one bag is one bag, and the extra $2 is for carrying some drinks. Maybe tip a couple extra bucks if it's a really expensive order just as a courtesy but frankly if you order a $2 hamburger I want seven bucks, which is $4 tip. If you order a $50 meal I'm still going to want like eight bucks which is a $5 tip. It doesn't scale linearly.

So many of the problems could be solved if the ordering side of the app would use the customers GPS and select the restaurant nearest to them. I hate driving past 2 other taco bells to deliver someone's food and they have a location 2 blocks away.

The problem and answer is .. the IRS considereds tips and bonouses as a reportable wage earning. The gig apps use that as a workable number to be payed out, followed by a store workable store in distance to a workable driver, calculated to justify $$ amount of costs involved in the allowed write off equal to milage in cost payment rendered. Showing a no profit gain to the app. Just a happy customers and drivers habit of conveniences without an understanding of how and why, just the new norm of Doing business on line

Doordash actually does factor in distance for the suggested tip, at least in my market, and it can be substantial. Same Hawaiian restaurant, 2 locations, same $55 order, one of them .9 miles from my house the other 5.5 miles, suggested tip goes from 5-7 dollars for the shorter to 12-16 dollars for the longer drive. That being said 99% of people will never tip that much around here but as shitty as doordash is most of the time I do give them credit for this in particular.

Hi Zach. Hope this finds you making lots of money. Very good video! I actually talked to DD today about the fact that they should NEVER allow a customer to zero out a tip. I told them that DD would actually save a lot of money by not allowing the practice as well as setting up the tips based on time rather than just putting the usual 2.50, 3.50, 4.50 options. Also asked them to provide me with info on how the lowering the base pay but supposedly going to pay per mileage amd time is helping dashers. (BS) I told them that they could not provide any data regarding that happening, as when orders get denied, they arent raising the base pay in most cases, they are taking and adding from the tip, just showing us more of the payout, with the exceptions of those no tip orders. With that said, time to me is money.

If everyone tipped 15% of their order subtotal, which is considered average (10% below average 20% above average), the world would be a better place.

What's with Door Dash anyway? This morning's orders started out terribly..an 8-mile delivery for $3.75 and a 15-mile delivery for $5. What's with these tightwads anyway? Both orders had the odor of cheapskate, not to mention lousy base pay. Those orders aren't just bad, they're insulting! Also, being tipped on a percentage of the time it takes us to complete the deliveries keeps the delivery services honest. Otherwise if one of them just required the customer to leave a tip, how much of that tip is going to the driver? Five gets you ten, not all of it.
