My favorite stroke is the old over arm side stroke, which is the third long axis stroke. Unfortunately, it was removed from competition prior to the 1900 Olympics, and the much slower breast stroke replaced it. The reasoning, supposedly, was that breast stroke was more gentlemanly because there was less splashing. I figured it out from learning the combat swim side stroke, and took the top side arm over the top of the water like freestyle. Only record in existence was set in 1895, over 125 years ago when a British swimmer swam 100 yards in 1:02.5. Freestyle at that time was 1:01.2 just to give you an idea how fast it is. I think it is easier to convert from side stroke, which just about any one can do to the over arm side stroke. Think top side arm doing the 1 arm pull drill, under water arm doing the breast stroke pull out stroke or a drill I have seen they some times call dog paddle where you extend and pull with both arms staying under the water. A flutter kick works better than the typical scissor kick. This turns it into a constant motion stroke rather than stroke and glide, which makes it faster. Took 3 seconds off of my 50 yard sprint time in 3 days. The first stroke I learned was swimming under water. I think it might work well to have beginners in water up to mid chest level, and then walk their way through the water, using feet and arms. You can learn the catch, high elbow/early vertical forearm, and body rotation. With the over arm side stroke, you don't have to turn your head to breath, body rotation puts your head above the water, just the right amount, one goggle in, one goggle out. It is not as fast as freestyle, but faster than breast and back stroke, and may be able to keep up with the fly. One coach told me it looked like I was swimming freestyle on my side. That is close....
