This song reached # 44 in Australia, # 2 in Ireland and # 1 in England in 1980. The song is about Soul singer Geno Washington, who was popular in Northern England, where obscure Soul records were very popular... Geno Washington also encouraged a young singer by the name of Ian Brown, who would become the singer of Stone Roses... in Australia, a TV show called Countdown pushed this song into becoming a hit by playing the video on a few episodes.

I loved Geno when it first hit the UK charts (a long time ago!) and it's still a very strong sound now. Everyone knows Come on Eileen of course but "There, there, my dear" and "Celtic Soul Brothers" by Kevin Rowland and Dexy's are also well worth a listen.

"There there my dear", from the same album. Fantabulous!

Has nobody commented on the irony of the band name?
Dexys is slang for Dexedrine, a popular amphetamine amongst Northern Soul clubbers.
Basically Adderall.
I've always loved that they are named after a drug, and nobody seemed to notice!

I remember this song playing on the radio fairly regularly when I was around 10, and I think this may actually be the first time I'm now hearing it again since then! 43 years later! 😅

this song is so good, he is singing about an old R&b singer called Geno Washington who he went to see in concert when he was young.

I still love this one, the brass riffs are so powerful. Shortly after this Kevin Rowland fell out with his brass section and changed musical directions with even greater success. I prefer this.

You can always count on Kevin Roland to be original, including his vocal delivery. I remember this going to No.1 in the UK when I was kid and when the 2 tone genre was big in the charts, which you can hear in this. He's still going strong making music today.
