bro's arm just CANNOT catch a break

It's actually all about ego.

In each example Gon injures his arm by being reckless and refusing to accept help from others. In the Greed Island arc, this same mentality from Gon got Killua's hands destroyed because, as Hisoka said, it is not enough to win, Gon needs the perfect win.

The need for a flawless victory is the common thread, he could have thrown the match in the exam arc & took on the next opponent as he had the most tries, but that's not a flawless win.

He could have stuck to the plan to wait for Killua and Bisky to tag in to defeat the bomber during the Greed Island arc but he'd rather do it on his own even at the risk of blowing up his hands. Same with Pito, the plan was always to work together with Killua but his ego had to turn it into a solo mission, all to retrieve the perfect win & redemption.

"I was just like Kite in the end." at that moment Gon achieved his version of perfection. All of the arm symbolism up to that point, even having his arm repeatedly crushed arm wrestling the phantom trope (because it mattered more to talk back and maintain face) was to foreshadow the behavior that would lead to his demise.

His self-sacrifice has never been virtuous, it was largely ego-driven and selfish. Like father, like son.

i always saw it as you said, as a sacrifice, nearly similar to FMA type of exchange

Gon’s arm: “Ah shit, here we go again”

I feel like it's more of a representation of his downward spiral into madness, as the arm injuries progressively got worse to the point where he just straight up lost it, while also representing the detriment to the whole "protecting friends and loved ones" trope.

I think Meruem cutting off his arm might be an intentional reference to this. It shows that deep down he's not purely evil and if he'd been raised in a different environment he could have been a hero. During the Chimera Ant arc, Gon grows darker and more morally grey as it goes and Meruem grow lighter and slides from a villain into being morally grey.

I think the hint is more about how extreme he can be. From the moment we learn about binding vows I wondered how and when that would pay off. More so as the series went on.

Togashi doesn’t like it when people have arms

I love that his reckless actions have genuine consequences and that gives the others in the cast the spotlight so we can see their equally interesting stories

Plus his arm/hand got quite damaged while arm wrestling Nobunaga in the Yorknew arc. The damage pales in comparison to other arcs but is still present nonetheless.
