This is my theory about Abstraction: When it comes to the human inhabitants of the ADC, their mental and physical health go hand-in-hand. When one undergoes a mental breakdown, their bodies undergo a 'breakdown' of their own, thus they become Abstracted.

One of the most tragic characters of the series, because of his very little screen time we don’t know his story, how long has been there?, what was he like before abstracting? Judging by the drawings of Caine along with the scribbles he obviously blames Caine for all of this maybe he knew more about Caine than the others but in his obsession to escape that knowledge was lost when he abstracted. Maybe that’s why Caine wasn’t that bothered when Kaufmo abstracted he knew too much and had to be silenced.
