In reference to your house analogy, it takes a really long time to become a master craftsman. How does one learn this? It's through practice and repetition to encounter different issues, but how does one acquire that knowledge? By being mentored and trained by someone who has those skills, and how did the mentor learn those skills? By being mentored by someone who also taught them. This is where companies get it wrong, being that when everyone is being trained and mentored, it makes for a more skilled labor pool. It also has the ability to lead to higher employee retention rates. People are loyal to companies that invest in them. Education is only the keys to the car, the experience is the fuel to make the car be able to go the distance that you need to go.

The biggest issue in all jobs (not just Cyber Security), is experience. People are more than qualified to do the job but they lack the experience. How are people suppose to do the job if nobody is giving them the chance to? I think in workplaces there should be a balance with employers attitudes towards employees who want to the job and someone coming into work just for the pay.

Well companies need to expect new employees have to become familiar to the companies technology. They cant expect to wave a magic wand and have you become an expert overnight.

This is great I'm an InfoSec newbie who just graduated and and have some internship experience in the field. I have been trying to figure out what steps to take and get the entry level position in this field. So much to choose. Would you know which orgs are known for taking on entry level candidates and help them grow?

This is a great and comprehensive video. Could have potentially been a very boring video but you kept the information relevant and your tone added interest to the content.

just a quick question, as an university student, refer to what you quoted on your video "Employers want you have the skill sets ready for the job", and i am getting curious about what are the benefits for employers to hire interns? since interns normally coming for work experience and they usually don't have all the skills that required.

Cyber Security is not quite comparable to building a house, because moving from company to company is comparable to moving from country to country, different building codes, laws, regulations, market standards, etc. If you import someone from Haiti to build a house in Los Angeles, they simply are going to need training, no matter how skilled they are.

Great Video! I am IT professional who has been in the system engineering and network engineering space for a while. I am looking to move over to cyber security as a focus and I am currently in school majoring in cybersecurity and assurance. What advice would you offer on making this transition. I have some security knowledge as it relates to my job every day but as I'm am learning in school there is a different spin on the cyber security side of the fence. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

There are some companies that only want to pay lower salaries and expect you to learn on the job on your own without any training. SHI in Somerset, NJ hires employees at a lower salary and expects them to learn on their own. On top of that, they expect employees to work overtime without any compensation. Stay away from SHI.
