As far as pronunciations go, an old mentor of mine once said, "How you're pronuncing it wrong depends on where you're standing in the world."

It’s interesting; every human culture has the same gods, the same concepts, but the way those gods are represented and how they function within the given lore of each culture gives us an insight to the thoughts of our ancestors and their state of mind during their time.

Some cultures were highly developed and conceptual, having gods of death that are less conncected to violence and death itself and rather the connection between life and death, while another culture may have been more war centric where fighting was common, where death gods are kings of the battlefield and war, death here being attributed directly to violence. These little things, show us so much. Even the way people cooked food can tell you so much about how they felt and thought.

Thank you for the very direct and fair description of La Santa Muerte, just the basics.. although I am rather biased, I think there is a wealth of information regarding La flaca and Her meteoric rise in Mex over the past 30 years..

Freyja actually welcomes into her realm those who died defending their homes; I named my cat Freyja because of this.

This is fantastic! So much more interesting depictions of death than I ever knew. Thank you for sharing your research and putting it together in a very quick and simple way of understanding it all.

You mentioned a god in Baltic mythology, I thought that you finally will mention the Latvian goddess of death… I haven’t heard of the one you mentioned, but old Latvians had Veļu māte (mother of spirits), also known as Kapu māte (mother of graves). In Latvian mythology she is the gatekeeper of the underworld, she’s not kind and she’s constantly waiting for people to die, some poems even mention her dancing on graves. After death, the spirit waits for Veļu māte to lead it to the underworld, and life there is almost the same as actual life, because in the underworld people finish things that they started in life. Veļu māte is usually depicted wearing white, and actively trying to lead people to their death.

I always find the Grim Reaper one of the most interesting "Death Gods". Well, not really a god, just a metaphorical personification. And that´s because of how simple it is. How very straight forward and impersonal it is. Which is quite atypical for such a being. Really, it is even more of a side figure, more comparable to the ferryman but even more basic. It´s just a very random entity whithout a true name, personality and very little embelishment. It neither judges, nor does it convey meaning or any form of consolation. It´s just there to do a job, completely apathic to anything else. And there is no afterlife attatched to it, no surety in belief. And in that it´s probably the closest and most acturate depiction to death among them all.

Thank you for these videos and covering lesser known figures I was pleasantly surprised Samael was mentioned because usually he’s not. You have a nice voice I think that’s why some thought you were AI 😂

It is theorised that Folkvangr, Frøyas' afterlife, also was the afterlife for female warriors and other honorable women. I think that's pretty neat
