Characteristics of Sound | Pitch, Loudness and Quality | Physics
Показать описание
In this animated lecture, I will teach you about characteristics of sound, pitch of sound, loudness of sound and quality of sound.
Q: What are the characteristics of sound waves?
Ans: There are different characteristics of sound waves like pitch of sound, loudness of sound, high pitched note, low pitched note, shrill sound, grave sound, loud sound, faint sound and quality of sound.
Q: What is pitch of sound?
Ans: The property of sound waves that distinguishes shrill sound from grave sound is called pitch of the sound. Pitch depends upon the frequency of a sound.
Shrill sound is produced when the frequency of sound is high and its wavelength is small.
For example, the sound of women, sound of birds and sound of cat are all shrill sounds.
Grave sound is produced when the frequency of sound waves are low and wavelength is large.
For example, the sound of men and the sound of dogs are grave sounds.
Q: What is loudness of a sound?
Ans: Loudness of a sound depends upon the sound energy. The larger is the sound energy, the larger is the loudness of a sound and vice versa. Loudness depends upon the wavelength of a sound.
Loudness also depends upon three factors like area of vibration or oscillations, distance from a source and medium through which sound travels.
Q: What is the quality of a sound?
Ans: It is the property of a sound waves that distinguishes two sounds of the same pitch and loudness if played on different instruments.
For example, if we play a sound of having same pitch and loudness on Dhool and piano, we will listen two different sounds. This property of a sound is called quality of a sound.
