Never forget the first time I walked around the SR 71…I was just in awe

I heard that thing going over Gulf Breeze back in the 70s, it had a distinctive sound.

Fun fact about the SR-71: The US had to source most of the titanium used in the -71’s airframe from the USSR. America’s titanium reserves are extremely limited. The USSR, of course, has loads of the stuff. The CIA ultimately ended up creating a complicated web of shell companies to shift all that Soviet titanium to the US. Presumably if the US was interested in pursuing a similar project today they’d rely more on composites and less on rare metals.

There is an A12 on display outside of the US Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL. You can also see it on the southside of the freeway (I565) when driving past the center.

@Andrews AFB 25 years ago it was only called the A-12 Oxcart { testbed for SR-71 }

Max, my guess is the initial pilots came from the cadre of NASA F-104 Starfighter and X-15 programs. If you can fly an F-104, can fly damn near anything. DCS will give you a taste of the challenges for the Starfighter.

I had many years ago I had the chance to spend several days with James Eastham. He was the YF12a first pilot flew the A-12 and the SR-71. He had a lot of interesting stories I really wish you would have published a book back then because there was a lot of stuff that will never know I only know what he told me and he had a lot of interesting stories about the program.

Just standing in person looking at the a12 of SR71 literally gave me chills bumps. Thinking about what the plane did for the world (very likely saved human kind) along with what the plane was capable of and thinking about what the pilots did/saw/knew literally give me chill bumps and shivers.

If I'm not mistaken, this plane was used in one of Call Of Duty games, or Battlefield

I think they wanted someone who was married so they would be less likely to fly to Russia and defect leave a wife and family behind. I'm sure the Russians would have loved to have gotten their hands on one of these.

Still waiting for these guys to admit the F19 was real and the F117 was only its cover up…

The thing was a flying gas can, literally. There was no fuel tanks, the fuel was in the fuselage. Imagine your car having gas in the doors and fenders.
