I find that direct eye contact isn’t a must (good for me, who physically cannot do it), but it helps if you are facing them, even if you’re staring at a crack in the wall behind the head of the player opposite you. If you face the players, they feel more involved, and less like they’re playing through a script.

When setting a scene, I try to make a dramatic start and have my eyes scan across the table. Works very well, especially since one of my players really hates being stared at. Whenever she wants to ask something she asks my senior player to help her figure out how to word things so that it can be quick, thus not getting stared at. My brother also bought us fake candles that flicker like real candles and they work really well for drawing attention when I can't figure out who to look at lol

I used to be horrible at eye contact, now it's just natural. I use it differently depending on the NPC (or secret villain) they're interacting with.

This has backfired really badly in my d&d game. My friends character which has 'genjutsu' which is a special ability I made myself for my d&d and he put the guy under genjutsu just to steal it's gold

In Barovia they turn that up to 11. They mantain eye contact even when not speaking to you.
