I remember these from taking taekwondo, there was an older guy who performed with these sorts of swords! And yes they WILL CUT! I always loved the snaps and claps of sounds they made when he performed. Added another level of intensity to the form

All swords are a lot more flexible than the average person would initially think. If a sword was too rigid, it would be more likely to snap than to bend, making repairs impossible. If you bend your sword, you *could* still use it and also straighten it out. If you snap it you’d have to get it reforged from smelt.
