I love the explanation, however the reflection in the movie contact moves with the door opening and yours does not, how did they get that to happen? The mirror in contact does have beveled outline too that moves with the reflection. I am not saying what you did wasn't the method, but I don't understand how they got the reflection to move with the mirror opening and you didn't.

FYI, they recreated this now-iconic mirror shot almost exactly the same way at the very beginning of Consecration (2023) because it is the same actress, only now she is an adult. It happens at the 4-minute mark!

Nice tutorial explains why we need the visual effect director in the first place. Could you explain the movie scene from the movie "the judge" when Robert Downey Jr take car from the airport and the camera fly through his side of the car window and fly all the way around to the other. Was it cgi and green screen because right now some gadgets can do it

Thanks for that - A bit late seeing this! Really good explanation of that extraordinary and clever sequence. Is there any info of how Robert Zemeckis or his DP came up with the idea? It just adds so much to a remarkable movie and it’s so subtle but jarring at the same time.

The hard part of doing this would have been doing it using year 1997 technology. You can nowadays do all the camera tracking, masking and compositing using free open source software on a laptop using UI that runs close to real time. In 1997 you probably had to write custom software to do some parts because "just fix it in the post" wasn't a realistic option.

that's clearly not the full story of "how it's done" in the original shot, because in the original shot the reflection moves (rotates) properly when the mirror is swung, whereas your shot keeps pointing in the same direction.
