Imagine you’re in an argument online and hours later you see yourself on Bad Legal Takes

A publicly traded company is a public company in the same way a hot dog is someone's pet.

This all makes so much more sense now... I never considered that people might confuse "publicly traded" with publicly owned". Holy crap that's stupid.

Basically: Publicly traded company =/= State owned company

It's always hilarious when some internet rando throws "Do some research!" at you, and the basic premise of their argument is completely wrong.

Kinda like how the word "theory" has different connotations ("theory" in a scientific sense VS "theory" in a vernacular sense)

Crazy, about a week ago I saw that exact same legal 'logic' somewhere else about publicly traded companies being somehow the same as a gov't run / controlled entity. I guess it's a popular talking point right now, despite being so horribly, horribly misinformed and wrong.

I've actually seen so many people not understand the distinction between "public" vs "private" (not even recently) that it's actually quite depressing.

I just can't get over that these people who claim to want less government, ...want more government when it suits them.

Good to see Dunning Krueger is still being proven correct each and every day.

This is a textbook example of the equivocation fallacy.

This is like those maskless Karens who think grocery stores can't kick them out because they're on public property or some such nonsense and are required by law to provide services

Funny how the big companies get to be private and enjoy the things a private company enjoys until they are in trouble and then they get bailed out and treated like a public service...

I mean, the first amendment does apply to a private, publicly traded company, but as a right. It protects said company’s freedom of speech (you’ve said as much before). Google has a first amendment right to display whatever results it wants and limit access in most ways it sees fit, short of violating discrimination laws. And let’s remind everyone that a refusal to air your political opinion does not constitute discrimination.

Google: "Look, it is conceptually impossible for us to violate people's First Amendment protections of Freedom of Speech because we are not the government... yet."

I love when people reply to others without doing their research on who they are replying to. Like when people argue with medical professionals about things in their field of expertise.

I saw this on Reddit that there is currently a case going on in which the person has an additional manslaughter charge that she should not have.
What happened is this woman was being arrested at gunpoint by an officer. And a supporting officer was speeding up the hill and when they crusted the hill they ran over the arresting officer and he died from his injuries. So now they are trying to charge the woman with a manslaughter charge claiming it was her fault the officer was run over. This is total BS but is there a way for her to win her case of not guilty. And what would come of the officer and the department if she wins.
