A common programming error is to attempt to check an inequality the second way. In some languages, 'x > 1' yields a truth value, which cannot be compare to 3. But in others, the truth value is either 0 or 1, which is always less than 3.

So, in C, for example, given _x_ = 10, '1 < x < 3' is legal, and true, and likely not what you mean.
