Explained simply: a function is a 'machine' that takes an input x and converts it into an output. Example:
f(x) = 2x + 1.
2x + 1 is the machine and x is the input. Now we can choose whatever x value we want. Say x = 2

f(2) = 2(2) + 1 = 4 + 1 = 5.
So when x = 2, it gives an output of 5.

Now you can do this with any x value. If you do that, you can plot the points, like the above example, (2, 5). If you draw the points on a cartesian plane, you get a graph of the function / machine f(x) = 2x + 1

In simple words:

A function is a pair of x values with the y values, and the same number of x value can not pair with two different y values.(x value is not repeated )

There can only be one y value for one x, meaning it is deterministic. You plug in the same value for x and will always, no matter what, get the same value for y. Multiple values for x could all equal y, such as in the function f(x) = 1, where all values of x result in a y of 1, but plugging in 7 in f wont return a different number the next time you plug it in.

If you do programming or anything the functions in programming is baisically the same as functions in math.
Its a specific set of rules that change a number.
For example: f(x) = x^2 + 3
The input is x and the output is y.
This can be written as
y = x^2 +3
So if x is 2, y would be 7.
If x is 3, y would be 12.
The graph you see a lot when you do functions is just this mapped out.
