If the gun on a Sherman failed, the crew resorted to their next best weapon-the Sherman itself. 18 June 1944, outside Caen, France, a British Sherman, mounting a 75mm gun, came upon a mighty Tiger II, or King Tiger. Having the angle for a rear shot, the Sherman crew became dismayed when their gun jammed.

With no other recourse, the commander, Lt. John Reginald Gorman, and Irishman serving in the 2nd Armored Battalion, Guards Armored Division, ordered the Sherman to ram the King Tiger. Which they did, much to the surprise of everyone involved. Both tanks were disabled by the collision, and both crews bailed out.

One of the Brits became confused and jumped into a ditch with four others, thinking they were his comrades. It was the Tiger crew. The Brit saluted and ran like buggery back to his real comrades.

The Sherman tank commander, Lt. John Reginald Gorman, commandeered a Firefly Sherman, went back and destroyed both the King Tiger and his own Sherman to prevent capture.

For his courage and audacity, Gorman was awarded the Military Cross.

Why shoot it in the rear when the sides are just as weak. That made no sense to me. Yeah or shoot it in the front which probably the 75 could at point blank range. Still a fun movie

The reason Germans kept building more heavier tanks was because of the Soviets. The Soviets would build more powerful tanks and the Germans countered. When the Americans met the Germans they got a surprise.
