katanas on average weight the same as longswords, but longswords have a point of balance closer to the hilt, making them more nimble, katanas are outclassed in every way when compared to the messer, the polish saber and the falchion, all cutting oriented swords that have better handguards, even if we consider o katanas, which are better sized for a westener, the construction on european swords proves to be superior on many cases, however, that's only a relevant factor if we refer to historical smithing techniques, with modern materials and a talented craftsman, any sword will be a good weapon.
this discussion is pointless, as the topic is too broad. however, all swords are equally worthy of apreciation, and having a favourite sword does not mean your choice and opinion is wrong, as long as you respect other people's opinions.

The longsword and the katana, although being of different sizes, were usually around the same weight. In some cases, katana were actually heavier due to the metals being used, or to their thickness.

While the katana had a sharper edge, it was also harder and more brittle, which is why it was purely for peasant slaying. The longsword, on the other hand, was made to actually fight against decent armour's and win, plate armour notwithstanding.

The longsword and the katana defined had differences in stopping power. With the longsword outlasting the katana, and having more apparent heft due to its longer length, while the katana was made for a quick one and done against people without much means to protect themselves, or for stabbing.

The katana was made for emergencies and status symbols, the longsword was made for war.
