Ghosts r real but they r not necessarily scary. If you have strong yang energy, the ghosts are afraid of you. My mother’s yang energy is strong. She is basically our free ghost buster. When I was young, my family lived in a building in Taipei that was famously haunted. But my mother was so scary that the ghosts would only bully other residents in the building but left us alone. A neighbor of ours on the same floor hired a Taoist priest to cleanse her apartment. Didn’t help at all. My mother went into the neighbor’s house and, for ten minutes, screamed profanities in the kitchen where the haunting usually happened. The ghost never came back.

Many Malay people told they've seen the ghosts eating the hungry ghost feast and the funeral procession ghosts. It's scary because if they noticed you've seen them then they'll chase you all the way home. Good thing for the old folks already knew how to keep them coming into the house.
