The story of Mae Nak in Thailand is a mix of reality and fiction, with many details added over time before being adapted into films. The true legend tells of a woman named Nak, whose husband went off to fight in the last Thai-Burmese war at Kengtung. While he was away, Nak became pregnant and tragically died during childbirth. However, her spirit lingered, waiting for her husband at the river pier every day.

During that time, Thailand primarily relied on rowing boats for transportation. When her husband finally returned from war, he unknowingly reunited with her ghost.

In a way, the story is both real and embellished. The most terrifying ghosts in Thai folklore are usually those who died unnaturally, such as in accidents (tai hong). Many people claim to have encountered such spirits, with eerily similar experiences. Some report seeing someone riding a motorcycle in the afternoon, only to later learn that the person had died in a crash earlier that morning.
