What’s your favorite quote about minimalism?

Whenever I'm letting go I'm surprised how much I have. :)

I've downsized from a 1700 sq foot home to what fits in part of a car. My goal is to get down to one carry-on so I can travel the world freely. I totally resonate with ALL you are saying. I have disdain for the American consumeristic culture. Less is MORE!

You really nailed this topic Gabe. You remind me of my Nana. She was the third out of five children born in 1930 to black sharecroppers in South Carolina. When she passed she left a seven figure education fund for her great-grandchildren. She gave me two pieces of advice that helped me embrace essentialism at a young age.

1. Frugality is the quickest path to freedom.

2. Your money is how you feel about yourself!

I live in CT with my husband and two children. We live in 700 square feet apartment. Everyone is asking us when! When are you going to buy a house. We get this question so many times that it actually made me think that thee is something wrong with us.
We are happy. We go overseas every year to visit family and this means a lot to me. We live comfortably and happy in our small apartment. Do I dream about bigger place- yes but do I want to work only for mortgage- no thanks

We are in London right now, and took a walk through Harrod’s. I was so uncomfortable in there (except for the chocolate shop)! Such a crazed robotic pursuit of the most expensive stuff to feel more important. I am so grateful to no longer be in that headspace and living a simpler lifestyle. All the money we save from not buying stuff helps fund our international travel. Packed in carry on only, not planning on walking in any gift shops, and feel so contentment. We will be bringing home only pictures and memories. Thank you Gabe for helping me on this journey.

My anxiety is best its been in over 20years; since donating over half of my household contents to charity. I never knew empty flat surfaces created such a feeling of peace + calm.
U think u need all these possessions but really u just need the basics of shelter, clothes, food + utilities. Giving my stuff away for free has blessed me far more than if I'd sold it. Hope this encourages others who struggle to let go of what we amassed over a lifetime

Still working to give away “stuff”
For some reason I’m dragging my feet on the kitchen. I know my life will be easier once that’s done. Got to set my intention and get it done!
Thanks for another encouraging video!

I loved the comment about Minimalism being the opposite of consumerism. That is a great realization which can lead to behavior change. Thank you

I'm doing a big yard sale this weekend and it feels really good to let go of all this stuff. I've been doing a lot of paring down lately and, yes, it is very freeing.

Always dropping the knowledge. Was nodding the whole time. Less is definitely more. More freedom to live the life you really were meant to live!

My parents were hoarders and I in my early years was well on my way....My apartment as a young adult looked like a grandmother had lived there all her life...As I sat sick watching my things be moved for me to my next neverending parade of boxes where all the things I had stashed in closets and corners were walked past me...it just clicked...NOBODY needs this much stuff ! So now I live much more simply with much less upkeep and the best part of living with less was a surprise....When I lived with abundant belongings I always wanted more and was envious of those with better....Now I find I need less and less and I don't look at others with envy or covet what they have I am grateful for the space that becoming a minimalist gave me both in my home and in my life.

I absolutely live better since I decluttered my home. There really is a connection between your brain having to constantly process what your eyes are seeing and creating anxiety regarding clutter. I used Joshua Becker's method of starting in the smallest room, working my way around the house (including attic and basement) and then sitting with it for a bit. Then I made periodic sweeps throughout the house to continue to declutter even more until I got to the point where I only have my absolute favorite things: heirlooms, family photos, items that have a story and seasonal decor. I also use the 1-in-1-out rule, which allows me to purchase new things but not end up with clutter again.

Loving hearing about how you are optimizing your lifestyle to be your happiest self. Moving to a mountain community that is 60 miles from a major retail location has really helped me, especially because I hate to get in my car to drive anywhere. We can get Amazon deliveries, so that helps will essentials. It's has also made me really intolerant to wandering around stores to look for what I need, so it has turned me into a "non-shopper". While I haven't gotten rid of a lot of stuff because I love most of what I have and I use it, not being interested in buying new stuff has really helped me.

Making breakfast and started looking around my kitchen at all the stuff I have.. and felt very overwhelmed. I was looking for some inspirational content to help me to let go of some of it and ironically you made a video around the same time! Thank you so much for your content! I’ve been watching for years and it’s helped me so much. ♥️

Another great talk! TY Gabe! I have been decluttering my items seriously since the beginning of this year. With working from home, it has given me more stress and anxiety to see how many items I am surrounded by. Still hard to let go of certain items so the process has been slow for me but still I am showing progress. But thankfully, I no longer buy random things or go shopping just because since I see how many items I already have. Definitely contemplate on my purchases now. It's also beneficial in saving me money and showing me what is more valuable in life. Which is not things. Your channel and other minimalist channels help me to see things in this light. Thanks again for the pep talk/motivation :)

It's all down to what you VALUE in life!.. Gabe.. You value retiring at 30yrs old and getting a tesla!

I got my first career at 30! I studied until then.. Now I have a job as a geoscientist research and teaching about climate change, traveling the world as part of my job, doing and seeing things "normal people" don't get to do or see in their lifetime. So I do NOT want to "retire early" because I am doing a JOB I LOVE and I am not just "working at something to make money to retire."

The most IMPORTANT USE OF MONEY to me personally is to use it to have EXPERIENCES (flying, parachuting, bungy jumping, absailing and climbing, white water rafting, sea kayaking, skiing, canoeing, etc) and to TRAVEL.. Alone (I have done backpacking all over Australia, New Zealand, and parts of Canada, Caribbean, Russia, Taiwan), with friends/partner (all over Europe, in parts of the USA, western Canada, the Caribbean) and with my kids (UK, western Europe).

Having experiences and traveling the world are what I VALUE IN LIFE most.

Having lived in 17 different houses and moved abroad (still here for now) you don't want stuff to have to pack and move around with you.

I have the most stuff I have ever had now (which I hate) and been the longest stationary now.. Living in this place 10yrs to date with my 2 children, who are at school... Now travel is restricted to during "school holidays" and experiences outside school time... Part of life!

But I can't wait to be a "free spirt" again when they are older.
