you still use them when determining where the function is increasing/decreasing.
if i say there is a local min at (0, f(0)), then that is not correct

so what is the problem? : )
i did not say there was a minimum at (0, f(0)) so i am not sure what you are having issues with.
if i forgot to mention that 0 is not a critical point cause it is not in the domain, well then, ops. however, you do use it for finding increasing, decreasing. and likewise, i do not consider it a min, so everything is good
