First impressions/Review of 'Tesla Style' stereo in a 2014 Chevy Cruze

This is a first impressions video about the "Tesla Style" car stereo for a Generation 1 Chevy Cruze. You can find it available on Amazon at the link below. The product is made and ships from China so it can take a couple of weeks to be delivered.

I didn't want to spend time editing video to correct minor errors but here's some of what I wish I had put in:

-A day after recording this I encountered a bug where the task switch and home buttons wouldn't work. I fixed this by going into the Android Settings (not the UI settings) and selecting the backup and reset menu option and using that to perform a factory reset. If you do this be patient; it takes about 10 minutes to finish. After this I had to sideload a google keyboard APK file using a flash drive to get an english keyboard (although I might have gotten the AOSP english keyboard to reveal itself had I disabled the single Japanese titled app with the blue "iFly" icon). I believe this also wiped out the local copy of the owners manual from the app menu, but I already emailed myself a copy of it so it wasn't lost. Anyway, the reset fixed the button problem and I was able to get everything working again after.

-Bluetooth pairing is only done through the bluetooth shortcut on the app bar. It's not available in the Android settings panel although I thought it was there before I started recording and made it sound like it would be. My mistake.

-Aux input is available via 2 RCA ports on the secondary harness.

-The time zone flipping issue was due to the Android settings having been statically set to China time instead of my time zone. Enabling automatic time/date and zone fixes this.

-In the Console settings page I never looked at before recording this, I've since discovered that I can change the unlock behavior of the car from unlocking only the driver side door with a single unlock click to all doors with a single click on the key fob. I didn't really see any other settings that would be relevant or worthwhile to me in there.

-Internet tethering over bluetooth does not work; you have to provide either a wifi hotspot, USB tether or just go offline with your stuff (e.g., downloading map data or music while you're home, hooking up a flash drive with your favorite MP3s, etc.)

-One thing that I forgot to talk about in the video is going into your Android Settings app and using its app manager to uninstall or disable unwanted apps that come pre-loaded. There is one app in particular which I believe was called "iFly" but it appears to be something that's Chinese only, I have no idea what it does, it could not be uninstalled and only disabled. I've found that disabling it has no impact on the usage of the stereo so I would recommend doing that.

Tip: I've paired my android phone with the head unit via bluetooth and then set up a rule in Tasker that automatically enables the phones wifi hotspot whenever it detects a bluetooth connection to the head unit. The single rule also disables the hotspot when the bluetooth connection drops. To create this rule you'll make a "State" profile and select the "BT connected" state and then specify the name of the stereo as it appears via bluetooth (if you've already paired the stereo to the phone you'll get the name to appear in a list by clicking on the magnifying glass when setting this profile up). After the name is specified you're done creating the profile; now you need to create a task for it to run. Look for the WiFi Tether task using the word search and have it "Set On". You'll have to create a second task that is the inverse of the first where the lack of a bluetooth connection to the head unit re-enables wifi connectivity on the phone.

lol i did the same thing when i replaced my head unit back in 2013... threw the little circle speaker aside and thought 'Nope'! I love that my cruze doesn't annoy me with turn signal clicks anymore! That speaker NEVER got put inside the car. I hate turn clicks!

I am surprised this integrates so well with the Cruze's systems. II guess they had the chance to customize it as they sold the Cruze over in China. But half of the Chinese radios I see on ebay are of poor quality. This tesla radio however, seems like a cool idea I might try next year.

I got one but I can't make work the sound while playing music by Bluetooth or media, radio works though, any advice?

I have the same radio with android 9.0 and I did not have any problems that you mention. everything works perfect

The screen where you can setup wifi. Is where you can set the time zone to your local area. So it will show up correctly.

Have you had any problems viewing the screen during sun light or during summer time because I have a different aftermarket unit and I'm having that problem and want to see if this unit is bright enough to see during the day in sunlight

i suggest that anybody buying this do your research, the head unit in this video I got a better one for same price on ali express with better resolution speed storage everything, do your research these head units are not regulated by the government so what you buy is what you get
