This is one of three frightening moments of The Handmaid's Tale tv series. I remember getting the chills seeing this because of how subtle the red flags were that preceded the women's firings...The bank accounts, the lack of respect from their male counterparts.
Margaret Atwood's suspense is so heavy in the first season like it is in the book. You get a vague idea of what Gilead is doing, and it's more scary thinking about the possibilities than it is with a direct explanation. This is one of those scenes. Example? Roger: "Not fired. Let go." It's almost as if he is saying "This is a man's world now. You are hereby relieved."

"No, no, not fired." Translation: "Yeah, you're all fired. But that's just the beginning of your nightmare."

It's interesting how the conservatives and proud boys fanatics slowly approach this kind of future in the USA. Banning abortions, speaking of stripping women of their voting power and so on. This series and book slowly turns from fiction to reality.
