Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader Review - Is it Worth It? Should You Play it?
In this Rogue Trader review, I want to talk about my experience playing the game. I played about 20-30 hours so far and I haven't played all the way through as it is quite a long game. But I want to kind of give you guys my impressions of the full version of the game and let you know what i think and whether i think it's worth picking up or not, if you are a crpg fan.

As a massive 40k fan who owns countless books, the massive wall of text is an absolute joy for me. I will happily chill and read about the lore and world building

As someone that loves 40k lore, this game is absolutely nailing it for me so far (just finished chapter 1) So few of the games have them cosmic horror vibes that make 40k such an interesting universe.

Along with a healthy dose of top down tactics games(Aliens Dark Descent, Wargroove 2, and Jagged Alliance 3), the venerable CRPG has had a bit of a renaissance this year between Baldur's Gate 3, Colony Ship, and Rogue Trader. As an old school Black Isle era CRPG fan, I could not be happier.

BG3 basically just shows that the main barrier of entry for CRPGs is production quality, not the genre itself (I mean Dragon Age: Origins showed that, but AAA developers (edit:execs) have zero faith). It's just that managing that level of production in a full-fledged CRPG is pretty big undertaking, and corps are too risk-averse.

I wasn't a fan of WOTR, but I love CRPGs as well as the 40k universe so I'll definitely be giving this game a try at some point.

“Too much combat”
Excuse me
Sir
In the grim darkness of the far future there is only war

I'm not a 40k nerd, I know almost nothing about it, but I've wanted to get into it for awhile and the idea that this game has a "ton of exposition, lore, dialogue, and world building" makes me think it may just be what I needed!

having played FFXIV, I have no problem sitting through 300+ hours of dialogue to learn an engrossing story

Owlcat is absolutely killing it. Owlcat and Larian Studios have been god sends for the CRPG genre. Imagine them collabing on a game, Larians polish and passion with Owlcats depth.

"in the grim darkness of the far future, there is only War" of course there is a lot of combat, wouldn't want it any other way in a Warhammer game as long the combat is fun which seems to be the case .

Never played 40k games before, I bought this game mostly because it's a CRPG and made by Owlcat. Played tons of Pathfinder and love the game to death. This will be totally new to me.

The endless walls of text and lack of voice acting is really grating on me too. I like the game but it is just a bit tedious. Like you said I had to take a break. Like I want to see all my characters get stronger and unlock more abilities but I'm just a bit hesitant to wade through the amount of time it's going to take to get there.

Thanks for all your thoughts. My life has made me not able to play a lot of the classics, or not enough, and it's important to know that something just soaks up lots of time, but I feel this is absolutely a game I will want to pick up when I can. I just don't know when I'll manage to enjoy it all. Hey, I like to read and I've touched on the universe, but I didn't play this studio's prior games due to constraints.

Newish to the 40k universe. Have painted some mini-figurines for novelty and to pick up a hobby. When i first started painting about a year ago, I was initially intrigued by all the different factions to choose from. I ended up deciding to paint Death Watch bc they looked the coolest. I liked playing Space Marine 2 bc it gave me more lore about the universe. I have put in about 3 hours into Rouge Trader and this is EXACTLY what I have been looking for. I want to learn more about the 40k universe, but I don't really want to commit to a novel. I love that this is more interactive than a book and is providing A TON of lore already (the encyclopedia in the game is awesome). I really enjoyed BG3 and RT so far looks like I will probably enjoy even more bc of the extensive character customization and deep RPG-building elements. I loved that I could create my own character and upload my own picture for the character (Jaqen H'ghar from Game of Thrones, assassin build is what I'm going for). So far combat has been really cool to learn and I am looking forward to the customization and the lore of 40k. Agreed with the reviewer regarding needing breaks...I definitely do not see myself binge playing this game for hours at a time. But 1-2 hour sessions after work, i am looking forward to. Just like painting the mini figurines!

Been playing this for the past 3 days and the character customization is INTENSE. Takes me up to 15 minutes to level up sometimes, I love it!

I've really enjoyed the Beta. I think it felt a bit off from being this super-powerful, ultra-wealthy Rogue Trader and having to scrounge for weapons, but otherwise it caught the feel of the universe quite well. Very much looking forward to taking the full game for a spin.

WH 40k, Complex Combat, Tons of Lore sounds amazing to me. I bought the game but will wait a couple of months until Owlcat fixes the major issues (which they always do).

I totally agree with all the reading. Like I like to read, but I also want to play and enjoy myself. Sitting in one spot going through SO much lore dumps and textwalls, kinda makes my brain itch. after a while I literally stopped caring. I wish the presentation of the lore was easier to digest. If I wanted to read a novel, I would just go do that. VOs would def speed this up. Like, when the party is talking about themselves and I can hear their voices I feel more engaged. (Argenta is best girl btw, but I'm a SoB main so I'm biased lol.)
