Let’s take a moment to appreciate all the sacrifices hardworking parents have to make to put food on the table for their family

Everyone making jokes must realize how hard your parents work to provide for you.

I'm a classical wind instrument player, the bassoon. We are taught from day 1 to NEVER EVER inflate our cheeks. All wind players, trumpet, trombone, bassoon, oboe, french horn etc.
It's completely unnecessary and would be deemed atrocious for any musician. Filling your cheeks is irrelevant to air column strength.

As a trumpet player I was told that this only occurs for 2 reasons.

1) lack of buccinator tendons
2) poor technique

As a high brass player, our lips, cheeks, and necks are routinely put under IMMENSE pressure. If it was as simple as pressure causing this, every trumpet player would eventually get this and that’s just simply not true.

Mr Dizzy Gillespie is the main example I can think of, but again I was told it was only because he lacked certain tendons.

The legendary Dizzy Gillespie had that condition from blowing his trumpet.

No wonder cartoon characters do this, they've been holding their breath and making balloons since their creation lmao.

His body basically adapted to what he’s devoted his life to, though.. it’s a bit scary that can happen but at the same time it’s like his body is just going along

Thats why you dont blow with inflates cheeks. Keep the tension in the cheeks and this wont happen.
