Creedence Clearwater Revival - Walk On The Water

Creedence Clearwater Revival is undeniably one of the greatest rock bands of all time, with an instantly recognizable, raw, bayou sound, popularized in songs like "Proud Mary" and "Green River”. Since their formation in the 1960s, CCR has sold over 50 million records, while their songs remain in heavy rotation on the radio.

Though the band only released 7 studio albums in their too-short career, Creedence had an astonishing track record: eight consecutive gold singles ("Proud Mary," "Bad Moon Rising," "Green River," "Down on the Corner," "Who'll Stop the Rain," "Up Around the Bend," "Lookin' Out My Back Door," "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?") and eight consecutive gold albums. With music that sounds as fresh and compelling today as it did 30 years ago, CCR is one of a handful of bands whose entire body of work has attained true "classic" status.

It should be said that this is the only song by Tom Fogerty that ever appeared on a CCR record. Tom was one of John's four brothers. Tom died in 1990 far too early from AIDS, which he contracted through a contaminated blood transfusion. This great song is his legacy.

Late last night I went for a walk
Down by the river near my home.
Couldn't believe with my own eyes
And I swear I'll never leave my home again!

I saw a man walking on the water
Coming right at me from the other side.
Calling out my name; "do not be afraid!"
Feet begin to run, pounding in my brain
I don't want to go; I don't want to go.

No, no, no, no, no...
I don't want to go.

Back in the 80's, I was a teenager and discovered this album in my Dad's collection, and since then it is one of my favorites of all time. Great!

The 'walk on the water' riff is totally the next decade: 'London's Calling' (The Clash, 1978) to a 'T', especially the rates of echo. it surely awakens a myriad of successive generations to a cause. Although the song seems to be about resistance to dying, it is indubitably a song for the the young man/person of the (difficult) day....

The serious Rhythm chops from both brothers kicks ass here, also the harmonic development of the guitar solo is next level Jazz, this song was way ahead of the pop curve, I seriously think it went straight over the heads of the average punter!

All those greatest hits compilations and radio stations inundated us with the same hits/tracks over and over, and songs like this and Ramble Tamble remained in the pop music broom closet until we started listening to the entire albums. If I owned a single disc retrospective of all CCR, this would definitely make the cut.
