Tip when wrapping many turns a toroid. get a thin but comparitivly long stick that will pass through the center. in your case a 10cm stick would be nice. Notch the top and bottom of the stick and wind the wire length you determined between the top and bottom notches. 8 meters of wire on a 10cm stick is 20 cm per turn meaning just 40 turns in total.

Now the stick also known as a shuttle will carry the whole length of the wire through the center of the toroid. The shuttle greatly shortens the length of wire you have to fiddle with at any one moment.

When you have a lot to door if you wind toroidals frequenctly, the Arduino winding project is very handy. You can key in the number of windings and it's done perfectly.

I heard that you can cut those rings in half and rejoin them together and the toroid inductors still work just as good ! I wonder 🤔bit of large heat shrink over the lot or some coke bottle should do the trick . It shrinks perfect

Thanks for the video, the coil measurement for the first layer will be that length but the rest of the turns will be longer with each layer. So with that measured length surly you will end up with less turns. Just a point of view.

that works but i usually make a coil form that you wind the wire on and fits through the center of the toroid but either way

Try using a thin stuck wuth a suitable cleft at each end. wrap the wire round lenghtways to make a bobbin and just use it like a needle releasing more wire as you go.

if you're only wrapping one layer of windings would it be easier to wrap around the pipe as you did and then spin it down onto the toroid and then tighten after the fact?

If you have a long length of wire there is a shortcut you can use!

Do it exactly as you did but when you measure the wire start at the middle and double the number of turns with each lap! Now there is a problem doing this .... the coil now runs half the turns in one direction and half in the other (no good for creating a magnetic field) . So you employ a simple trick. You have now got the two ends together and a short loop at the opposite end. Simply cut the loop and join one end to the opposite piece from the loop you just cut.
You end up with one end spiraling round to the cut loop and back to the start of the other piece. You do need to check you join the right end to the right piece you cut (a meter is handy ... or if you are stuck a torch bulb and a battery will do). It is a bit long winded to explain, but will make sense if you try it! ;0)

Luke, I'm a big fan of Robert and when you showed up a few months ago, ~I said what the hay.~ ;-)

Regardless, as a robot builder, I am under the firm belief that unless one knows the most basic elements of the subject, like winding a toroid, it's Lego Block(tm) experiment. I have yet to wind my own. I thank you for the tips. Looking forward to doing my own.

Any tips for winding 3 phase star coils? I'm making a 3d printed vawt.. love the vids, cheers.. (ps.. I need twelve coil packs, I plan to scale up my turbine model but I was limited by the 8 (15mm dia neodymium magnets I currently have.. my coils will be a similar size).. any advice greatly welcomed.. I was hoping to generate enough power for one or two LEDs).. it's for my aunt's garden :)
