Our latest Honest Government Ad was about the devastating floods in Qld & NSW so I am stoked to have as my guest for the podcast a Lismore local, farmer, mother, grandmother and kickass environmental lawyer Sue Higginson. We talk about the incredible community response to this climate disaster, the acts of heroism that have saved hundreds of lives; and of course, the woeful government response. We also discuss the recent outcome of the Sharma vs the Environment Minister case in the Federal Court - which Sue is well placed to talk about in her professional capacity as an environmental lawyer and former principal solicitor at the Environment Defenders Office, Australia's leading environmental law institution, which has taken on mining giants like Adani, BHP and Rio Tinto in the courts - and won.

If you enjoyed the podcast, please share it with others.

Catch you soon for our next Honest Government Ad 🧡

I want to share this and explain how this relates to every country.
It is disgusting how governments are being bought and financed by big corporations.
What should be on the top of priority list and what is being put on the bottom of the list is citizens of humanity.
I will remember Sue in with her efforts for the people. We need people like her.

I salute you all at thejuicemedia, and particularly Sue Higginson.
Now in my 50's I still rage inside my head on a daily basis, with the blatant theft of our planet by wealthy and powerful criminals of corporations and governments around the world. Please do what we have failed in trying to re-balance the health of the planet for the survival of the human species. And to his Honerable MrFukery ScoMo .. I hope one day in the near future you endure the pain misery and anguish of loss to the same extent as so many of my fellow humans are suffering RIGHT THIS SECOND .. so that you too finally understand the difference between power and the total loss of control of it.

Holy crap Sue is amazing. Exactly the kind of person I'd want representing me in any level of government (I'm not holding my breath though).

this is a great podcast, I always loved these but this hits close to home now, I live in a town downriver from Lismore, very few people in my town chose to evacuate, but where we live is a lot more low laying then the rest of the town, we don't have much since we cannot afford much, my dad is a cancer survivor and we where both recovering from surgeries at the time, it was always somewhat normal for water to come into my shed but by the time it was ankle deep we made the call to pack the car and evacuate town, I got my dad and my dogs in the car and by the time we here leaving the water in my shed was knee deep, if we had left it 1 more hour we wouldn't have been able to get out of town, in the morning from the safety from my brother's house it was surreal to see people I knew trapped on the bridge in my town, our home was underwater for 9 days and we lost pretty much everything, but we where lucky in a way, things could have been a lot worse, my shed got washed at least 100m and got stuck on a tree in someone else's property, we have been trying to move it back so I have somewhere more comfortable to sleep, it is a little damaged but better then nothing.

As an American ( and also Canadian and European), I wish you good luck in the upcoming election. We narrowly managed to get an aspiring dictator out of office here, so I can relate to the level of despair in one's federal government. Money has corrupted it thoroughly, and nothing will improve significantly until that source of corruption is removed.

Thank you for hosting such an inspirational future parliamentarian. We need more like Sue to reshape the Australian political landscape and get us back on track focusing on genuine community needs and futures instead of vested interest.

Listening to Sue's testimony here her voice near breaking point all throughout is just agonizing.

Knowing without hindsight this entire event was not only preventable from a number of lives lost but also predicted for years now is just criminal.

There is money out there to be invested, it was meant to be invested and only through underhanded and dubious means was diverted to wasteful slush funds instead. A government regardless of local, state or federal which isn't investing in helping to get better results for the Australian people and it's communities should not even be considered as a viable choice come the election!
