My ex-husband got a big ticket for having New York plates and license in L.A. when he had just started a post-doctoral fellowship at UCLA. He was driving an ancient Ford Country Squire station wagon, not a new Lamborghini. They made him get out of the car and sit down on a grassy patch while they decided what to do with him, which seemed excessive. This must be the excuse California cops use to harrass drivers who they're curious about for whatever reason.
