I immediately started crying when she did because I understand exactly what she is saying. I have sever L5/S1 disc degeneration, to the point that it is bone on bone. Displaced disc material is pushing on the nerves on both sides, causing severe sciatic pain down both legs. I too was active and enjoyed working out, which I can no longer do, so I know what it is to feel like you are no longer yourself. That said, I am still very apprehensive about this surgery. I have never had surgery of any kind and something this invasive absolutely terrifies me because of everything that can go wrong.

3 weeks post op, same disc and surgery. Thank you so much for sharing your story. I was racing bikes and had to completely stop since worsening the injury 3 years ago. Wished had done it then. Do not wait people

I have the same degenerative disc she has. I had a surgery set at mayo clinic after going to multiple Dr's and pain clinics. However my insurance denied my surgery 3 times. Living with this pain for two years I've wanted to take my own life 1000 times. My wife has suffered through this process as well. Locally we have a new surgeon who agrees that my disc is shot as well and wants to do a disc replacement and I'm hopeful for recovery and praying uhc stops screwing me around. I'm 46 very active and just want to live and get back to work. Thanks for your story

I’m 32 and about to see my surgeon again to give the go ahead with an artificial disc replacement for the same L5 S1 problem, I’m scared as hell and put it off for as long as I can out of fear but seeing this success story has made up my mind to go for it, I love bodybuilding and fitness and just want my life back, I really hope I get the same result as you Haley

Had a microdisectomy 11 years ago at the age of 21. Injured it playing basketball and it was pinching the nerves in my left leg and making my entire leg twitch non stop. Since then it flares up once or twice a year. I’m currently in a flare up right now and I’m losing strength in my leg for the first time ever and the nerve is being pinched watching this video gave me more confidence on a more permanent fix so I can stop waiting for the next flare up or permanent damage.

I can totally relate, everything you went through I went through the same 18 years ago.Unfortunately I haven't had mine fixed, I've just gone through the pain and physio three times a week but it never goes away.
I’m an Australian who has been residing in Japan for 25 years, they don’t do this procedure in Japan, no idea why not.

I was quoted $80, 000 in most countries I enquired about doing it as I had/havethe same disc degeneration.

I'm so happy for you young lady ☺️ Live life to the full

I am 32 and I've suffered from lumbar pain due to herniation and degeneration that started when I was 12. I fell off of a roof 4 years ago and it nearly broke me. I am a shadow of my former self. But, I am finally having disc replacement surgery next month. I'm anxious, scared, and excited to get my life back. Thank you for sharing your story! It gives me hope!

I’m a 60 year old male, my back pain started when i was 25, it went doing T bar rows in the gym. My back has slowly gotten worse over the last 35 years, I’ve had every kind of treatment even stem cell replacement, all to little or no avail, I have been told by one surgeon I need a fusion, another disc replacement, and another just lost of strengthening exercises!! My life is totally ruled by the pain I’m in every day, i no longer work or exercise other than a few chosen stretches, I envy you for getting your life back, but BE CAREFUL, take notice of the old saying, once bitten twice shy!!! Good luck beautiful lady

I never usually comment but I’ll share my story since when my disc injury happened I turned to YouTube and found some stories helpful.

I am 35 yr old professional athlete. My injury I believe happened over time. A number of things probably contributed, maybe not getting the right nutrition for the amount of strenuous working out, not warming up or warming down properly, many movements from basketball that tax the body. Two practices a day plus traveling on buses and planes. We lift weights throughout the week as well.

It begins for me (I think) with an SI joint problem, core instability. It caused back pain, I went to therapy and it became better. But then I went into the season again pushing harder for a longer time. The back pain went away and I thought it was getting better. Instead of getting better my back went numb and my legs began to feel weaker. The right leg specifically. So that summer I went to train harder thinking my legs just needed to become stronger. Mistake.
Before the season started, one particular workout I twisted my right knee. I knew it felt off but I couldn’t really feel the pain for the leg was partially numb. I got to my team and was treated for the knee. It started to get better. I was having some inner ankle pain and hip pain maybe for months now as well but thought it was unrelated. (With sports were always banged up so we get treated often). I have seen 3 physiotherapist who diagnosed with piriformis syndrome. (I think some had an idea of a herniated disc but didn’t want to say since the team I played for there are well known).

Anyways fast forward 2 1/2 months on a game day. I felt a pressure in my right leg and could not stand for long. After this day I spent 3 weeks in the bed not being able to care for myself or stand for more than 10 seconds. I had to crawl backward to get to the bathroom and shower on the floor. Miserable. All my teammates came to visit me and give me encouragement but it hurt them to see me this way since I sometimes have a tough persona. I got an mri and was diagnosed with L5 S1 extrusion, and L4-l5 disc bulge.
It’s 6 am I’ll finish the post later today to put some of the questions I wondered for over a year I think I have found some answers to.

Dr. Patel will be assisting my disc replacement surgery in December. I’m looking forward to finally complete this. I am currently preparing myself for surgery by going on a strict diet and moving as much as possible. Doing everything I can to make sure I heal quickly and get back to a normal life.

Hits home!! 22 years old just had this surgery. Pretty sure my injury was due to football around 18yrs old. 1st year was just irritation, 2nd was worse and 3rd yr of pain I walked with a constant limp, couldn’t sit, sleep hardly, and sneezing or coughing would almost send me to the ground. I’m almost 4 weeks into my recovery post surgery and getting more mobile.. Can’t wait to see the end result. Thanks for sharing
