China’s space programme has come a long way since the country embarked on its first space mission in the late 1960s. Today, it is only the third country in the world to carry out manned space missions, after the United States and Russia. As China continues setting new milestones in its space programme, we take a look at what’s fuelling its space aspirations.

In 2007, Chinese vice-minister of science and technology Li Xueyong said that China would like to participate in the ISS.

In 2010, ESA (European Space Agency) proposed for China to participate, this was denied by the U.S.

In April 2011, the U.S Congress banned NASA from engaging in bilateral agreements and coordination with China.

In April 2021, China launched her own space station.

Hope my late father could see this from heaven, he's the most patriotic Chinese I've ever met in my life. Well done China, your never ending rise is a constant source of joy and pride to all overseas sons and daughters of mother China. Will forever love, cherish and support you China. From Singapore

That's the reason why I drove my 3 grown up kids 150 miles and back, twice a week for their Mandarin classes without fail for 12 years in my Great State of Montana. The best investment of my life after seeing all of them having high paying jobs today

The lady narrator mentioned "Qian Xuesen" in the clip, a brilliant rocket scientist who did research in both MIT and Caltech, also a co-founder of Jet Propulsion Labs, was house arrest, stripped off his Army colonel rank, and prohibited from any research work for his sympathy toward Communist China during the 50s. In 1955 he was allowed to return to China in exchange for 11 US airmen captured by China during Korean War. Some politicians objected to the exchange, fearing his rocketry knowledge and experience in US will enhance Communist China rocket capability. He's called "Father of China Rocketry" for his laying the rocketry foundation.

Connecticut and New York metro area schools were always integrating materials into the curriculum. Teenage science fiction reading was always a important collection in the Americas. Great reporting!

I'm sure the small space station will become double or triple of current size soon. Maybe in a future China will try to build a space city out there. Everything is possible for China now.

Space programs will catapult science&tech development of a country. So many things developed for space programs, and those inventions then used in daily life by ordinary citizens. Things like CAT scans, camera phone, baby formula, freeze dried food, artificial limbs, scratch-resistant lenses, wireless tech, etc are just few things I can think of when it comes to inventions that were originally developed to assist space programs- then used in daily life by ordinary people.
