Explore the tiles and consider the questions below. You do not need to write down answers
for this part.
a. How many different sizes are there? What are all of the different sizes?
b. How are the sizes the same? How are they different?
c. How are the sizes related? Which sizes fit together? Which do not?

Each size of tile is named for its area. The smallest tile, called the “unit tile”, has sides that
measure exactly 1 unit. Therefore, the area of the unit tile is 1 unit × 1 unit = 1 unit . Can you use

the unit tile to find the exact area of the other tiles? Explain.

Draw a picture of each size of tile below. Label the side lengths and then find the area of
each tile. Use x and/or y to represent different unknown side lengths.

Use your algebra tiles to build and sketch each expression as a tile figure. Make
sure to indicate any “negative” tiles in your drawing with color or labels.
