Upgrading my Synology DS213 with two 3tb drives.

Fairly straight forward process but thought I make a short video how to do it.

Thanks for this great tutorial, I was lost with the documentation from Synology and was not sure about the next steps after inserting a new disc. Thankfully I found your video. Explained very well and in a way that everyone can follow along. Well done!

Just a caveat if you want to buy a Western Digital hard drive for your NAS: be sure to buy a WD Red Plus disk, not just WD Red. Western Digital have been very sneaky and have changed the model name WD Red to a far inferior product (with SMR technology, shingled magnetic recording, which is not suitable for a NAS). Pay attention to the manufacturer's code and ensure it's something like *WD40EFRX* and NOT -WD40EFAX- .
As a side note, the DS213 actually _is_ hot-swappable, like most Synology DiskStations. (Check your model to be sure). It's quite a nice feature as users can continue to use the NAS uninterrupted. Of course, you can switch off the machine if it makes you feel safer. But the hot-swappable devices are designed with continuity in mind, so it's probably not too dangerous. I've got good experiences with hot-swapping my DS214.

Anyone else tilt their head at going from 2TB to just 3TB? Great video! Going from 4TB to 8TB in my DS218+, so this video helps. Thanks!

If you are running on a rad, do you have to have a duplicate hard drive?

Cheers for the simple guide... I just needed to know the way to release the drive from my 216 (same process) and kick off the recovery. 3tb to 4tb for me, thank you Amazon and Black Friday deal!!

Thanks for the video - Q: Can I have the 2 drives as independent NTFS values? if yes, how?

thank you, your tutorial is simple but very useful, i'm now upgrading my hdd from a full 3TB to 6TB, probably would take 2 days to complete both volume! and i have no idea why there is dislike to your video xd

So you had 2 2TB drives. You upgrade 1 to 3 TB, repair. Then once it is done, you did the other one. Correct?

What happens when you upgrade one but not the other? Does the space remain at 2TB? Or Synology will not let you.

Great vid! After replacing the drive in bay #2, I would repeat for bay #1, same way, correct? (upgrading both drives to larger ones). Thanks!

I have a 4-bay Synology (413j). Would you advise changing/upgrading 4 disks using the same process?

Interesting, so you reccomend adding one disk at a time so that all of your files copy over. Just bought a pair of 10TB hard Drives so I'll try that.

I have a DS412+ with 3x 3tb drives, and i just bought 2x 6tb drives so it will be 2x 3tb and 2x6tb for 12tb available space and 6tb for protection. But i can't see if its ok to remove 1 drive and add the 2 new ones right away, or if i have to do it 1 by 1. Could probably just have done it 1 by 1 in the time i have spent looking for an answer though... Maybe you know? Old and new drives are all WD red

Great video, thanks! I will upgrade my current 1tb hdd to 3tb soon. How long did the initializing take on the new disk?

I'm sure the DS213 is hot swappable, I have seen a video of a person using the DS212 and he "hot swapped" it, but you have to rebuild the disk again, so best not hot swap it
