In 1971, Deep Purple decided to produce and record their album Machine Head in Montreux. The group was also scheduled to record at the Montreux Casino, shortly after Frank Zappa performed. During Zappa's concert, the venue caught fire and reduced the Casino to ashes. (Funky Claude) Nobs saved several young people who had hidden in the casino, thinking they would be sheltered from the flames. Nobs, who had served as a volunteer fireman, knew that the casino was not actually a safe place and acted immediately to get them out. This act earned him a mention (in the line "Funky Claude was running in and out pulling kids on the ground") in the song "Smoke on the Water", which is about the incident. Also, on the inner liner of the original album, Nobs' picture was the only one labeled with a name other than those of the band members themselves.

"No matter what we get out of this" ... probably one of the greatest hard rock album 'Machine Head' by Deep Purple.

As the song says it was the casino in Montreux Lake Geneva Switzerland where they were about to perform. The song is very literal. Awesome band of musicians with one of the best singers in rock ever!!

You might think that this riff is easy to play. Actually, most play it wrong. And then there is Roger Glover's basslines. Man, how funky and chunky that Rickenbacker bass sounds. And soolo hard to play. Especially during the guitar solo. Thanks for your reaction, always a pleasure.

City: Montreaux Switzerland, Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention were playing at the Casino there until some Czech in the crowd shot a flare into the ceiling burning it to the ground. FYI, Funky Claude was a local events promoter who doubled as a volunteer firemen. The line "Funky Claude was running in and out pulling kids out the ground" is about Claude running in and out of the casino saving the teens inside.

Child in time, mistreated, black night, react to the live versions! They’re cool looking dudes to see perform and Ritchie Blackmore is a legend on guitar!

Funny how you mentioned trying to learn it on Guitar. I love this song and I once got a guitar to try and learn but didn't have much luck but was able to learn the intro by plucking the strings. Then it got to complicated after that. lol. I didn't have even eye skill to handle the top frets and strumming or plucking the bottom and remembering all the chords and notes for songs. Some people got it and some don't. I always wondered if I would be better at drumming though.

Lex, yes this is the first RnR songs people learn to play on guitar cuz of its simplicity or the riff !

Well playing those chords is very easy but playing it like Ritchie is borderline impossible. He was truly a master of the instrument.

The riff is pretty much the first riff every guitar player learns. You could totally do it! You should react to 'Highway Star' by Deep Purple.
