SUMMARY : Project 75 India

* Government has recently issued a Request for Proposal (RPF) to the two selected Indian Strategic Partners (SP).
* They are : MDL and L&T for building six conventional submarines indigenously under the Project 75 India or P-75I.

Panelist 1 : Vice Admiral (Retd.) Shekhar Sinha, Strategic Expert

1. Project 75 is part of India's Submarine Building Plan.
2. India had 30 year Submarine Building Plan: it has gone through lot of ups and downs.
3. The Building of Submarines was decided in 2011: But it didn't happened.
4. Submarines are built by Indian Companies L&T and MDL, They take care of time, cost, staff of building submarines.
5. It may take another 10 years for the first submarine to sail on.
6. Developing our own technology of building Diesel Submarines is critical.
7. Earlier we built it under collaboration or tech. only 4-5 players in the world who can build this.
8. When we have partnership with these private players to build : we will have eye on technology, integration with torpedo, sonars...and how this is built.
9. AIPs are important for keeping battery charged, and it need not come to surface for charging...and stays hidden Underwater for longer time.
10. Submarines are very critical: as Indo Pacific is large and Strategic.
11. At present Conventional are important but in the long run: Nuclear are very much needed one.
12. If we see the capability of Nuclear Submarines: they are quick, more explosive, and keep eye to larger extent.
13.Right now we have 12-13 submarines, 6 are on the way and 6 Nuclear Submarines are also on the way.

Panelist 2 : CDR (Retd.) Abhijit Singh, Head, Maritime Policy Initiative, ORF

1. Defense ministry's tender is long awaited.
2. This is happening in the context of China's presence in the Backyard i.e. Indian ocean.
3. If we won't have this technology, we will be left behind in this technology.
4. Indian Navy is under Prime Deficit of Submarines, which Submarines got more priority over aircraft.
5. We will get technology, expertise of our own, that will be permanent with us.
6. AIP is critical technology: Makes P75 Stand apart, MDL has tested this for operation and countries are seeking it.
7. Germany, South Korea use this type of technology: So it is ambitious for India.
8. India needs critical Technology like AIP, Indigenous weapons and sensors and Engg. expertise from these companies.
9. We need conventional submarines: 6, and also nuclear submarines which takes loner time.
10. Right now we need attack submarines 10 year down the line: we are in the right direction to tackle the rising China.
11.
12. We need 4-6 nuclear submarines: But development of Conventional Submarines are very very important, seeing the security issues.

WORD CORNER : Air-independent propulsion (AIP): is any marine propulsion technology that allows a non-nuclear submarine to operate without access to atmospheric oxygen (by surfacing or using a snorkel).

" We have to consider the submarine equation with cautious as we move ahead in the couple of years with more indigenous technology and focus on both conventional and nuclear technology"

Thank U:)

Project 75 INDIA is an indigenous submarines building project based on a strategic partnership model which helps to strengthen NAVY power in the counter of Chinese influence in INDIAN OCEAN. As per this project, India will build 24 submarines by 2030. It also helps in maritime security monitoring as well as focusing on research and development for indigenous technology.

I was not happy with the Vice Admiral lack of strategic eye, Whatever Abhijit was saying should have come from the Vice if he had held that high position. Any ways nice to know ORF has some good people who can look into the future and prepare for that

Vishal sir, it will great if you could give a longer background to such technical issues for laymen. Sometimes obvious things don't really look that obvious 😃

Retired word is always written at the end of the persons name because rank never retires.. It is the person associated with the rank who retires.
