Chapter 7 will definitely have some good information for you, and make sure you get the most recent updates (available in the readers group on Facebook) because I recently expanded this section. Anyway, the best lenses are the 24-70 f2.8 and the 70-200 f2.8--image stabilization helps. A bounce flash with lots of batteries is important, too. Well, good luck, and check out Chapter 7 for detailed info.

DNG is Digital Negative files. It's a raw format that's not camera specific and supports lossless compression to reduce file sizes. When I import pictures into Lightroom, it converts them into DNG format. It doesn't effect the actual picture, however. It takes some extra processing time, but DNG is more universally supported than each camera's raw format.

Thanks, Lawrence!

If you're happy with Elements, stick with that. Lightroom is definitely more powerful, but not everyone needs it.

You can buy the print book from our Facebook store and we'll ship it anywhere in the world. Just click the link in the description, and on our Facebook page, click the Store link. You can check reviews at amazon (we're just processing a new print edition so we're still getting setup to sell directly at Amazon)

The noise is a factor of the ISO you choose. Check Chapters 4 and 8 in Stunning Digital Photography (links in the description) for a complete overview. Often you do have to choose a high ISO to get the shutter speed you need, but it depends on your lens and the lighting.

I would choose Shutter Priority (Tv) and 1/2000th, using exposure compensation as needed. Unfortunately, the 1D mk II doesn't have auto ISO, so you'll have to manually adjust it, but the book has plenty of info on that.

You know, I used to use these professional-level NEC monitors for professional designers and photographers with perfect color and contrast and such. Now I use Dell 3007WFP monitors (cheap 30" monitors) that cost a fraction of what my professional 20" monitors cost, and while I can see the quality difference, it doesn't bother me and definitely doesn't impact my photography. I love having the extra screen space, though.

Yes, I use Lightroom to convert my raw files to DNG. DNG files take up less space (they use lossless compression) and they aren't camera-model-specific, so they should be easier to work with in the future when my current camera bodies are long forgotten.

It was a Canon 5D Mark II (because my Mark III was in the shop). It does about 4 frames per second.

Good idea! That would reduce your file size a bit, but it won't improve detail, and reduces your field of vision, making it more difficult to keep the bird in the frame (assuming it's a flying bird). So, I'd stick with full frame and crop in post.

Check my two review videos of the 5D3, especially the "Long term review" video, where I discuss the different needs photographers have and which benefit from the 5D3 and which are better off getting the 5D2 and spending the remaining cash on lenses, lighting, or software.

Yeah, but truthfully, that's about as close as anyone is able to get to an osprey in the wild, and even that took months of patience. Wildlife shots like that are almost always cropped, but my lens is sharp and there's still plenty of detail for 11x14" prints and certainly web use. Check Chapter 8 in my book for more info (link in the description).

I love your dogs. They do to you just what mine does to me: When she hears me talking on the phone...you, talking to the camera...they just naturally think it is them you are addressing, and come for attention. It's commendable the way you treat them, rather than bark at them to go away.

I also greatly enjoy your videos, and appreciate the time you give to us, your viewers. Your book is on my Kindle, and on my PC for Kindle.

Thank you.

It's the YouTube compression on the video--sorry. You'll have to take my word for it, but zoom into 200% or 400% on any picture with clear blue sky and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Funny you ask, I just filmed a Picasa video today. I'll probably have it up tomorrow.

Lightroom is clearly more powerful, and Picasa is clearly less expensive (free :).

Probably not, I rarely use M mode. Check Chapter 4 of Stunning Digital Photography (links in the description) for a detailed overview and my recommendations.

Valid point; I'm just in the habit of jumping into Photoshop.

That's a good idea. I'll add it to the list.

Yeah, I purchased the book two days ago and I like it so far. He makes his book easy to understand, and to the point.
