Back Splice 3 Strand Rope - Easy to Follow How to Back Splice a Rope

I believe that the back splice is also known as Dog Pointing, Spanish Pointing and Crown Splice? Please let me know in the comments if this is correct.

In this short video, I will be showing you how to back splice a 3 strand rope. I am using coloured rope which may make it easier for some people to follow.

The back splice is one of those things that sailors either love or hate! One of the main problems with a back splice is that by doing this the diameter of the rope is increased. This can in some case cause the rope to be useless for completing certain tasks where for example the rope has to be passed through an object. Therefore, whipping is preferred as this does not increase the diameter of the rope.

Thanks for doing this in the different colours.
It makes it much easier to see the crown knot.
I have made back slices before but I never made a crown knot so thank you for showing me how.

another very clear description, Jonny, of an essential skill in safe rope use - even tho' this splice is unpopular with a section of the water sport community it is very useful in general use of the rope - whipping the cut ends is also essential for safe long-term use of any rope

Good job. Nice and clear, the different colours really help. I'm not a sailor so as far as looks go...works for me.

It's interesting that you are spiralling around the rope as you splice. I have found that it you keep a straight line down the splice you get a much thinner and tighter splice. Just mentioning a different method, please don't think I am criticising ;) it's great to see how different people work.

6:38 Gesundheit. And thanks for the video. I was trying to do this from memory but had a hard time remembering how to do the crown knot.

it might be the way video cards read colours, but the 'green one' is entirely blue as far as I'm concerned.

Would you allow the Back Splice on your vessel?
