This video corrects the bad advice about setting up with your eyes over the ball and gives you a method to help you see the line and set up on the line based on your unique vision. Try it and comment below.

My left eye is my dominate eye, I've been lining all my putts up using my right eye, because I'm right handed. Now I will change. Thank you.

I've been watching almost every video you produce on putting. I can honestly say at first blush you think how can I recall all of these tips. My strategy is try one tip and master it. Seems like everything else falls into place once you get one down pat. Beauty of the internet is you can rewatch and fine tune the information. It is work to be good but you have to put the time in. You only cheat yourself if you don't invest in yourself with practice .
Great video!!

An old CD works as well as a expensive putting mirror. But great advice in this video.

I learned to trust my line on my ball once I set it, when I stand over the ball it almost always looks way off, but i just ignore it and trust my line. Thanks for the putting tips!

Brilliant, thank you.

This has really helped me out, and my putting is much improved - specifically my putting line.

Best regards.

I'm left eye dominant, left handed but putt right handed. I don't have issues with lining up, I pick a spot a foot in front of the ball and putt over it.

However, big issue is judging distance when side on. I ended up opening my stance and getting both my eyes (and my left eye especially) looking more down the line. Lag putting is now much better 👌

Thanks for continuing to bring us great content as we learn the sport of putting!

That makes sense. I'm not sure if this is the reason I'm short and generally off to the right of target (vs left), but I'll give it a go.

For the "basics", the alignment seems to be #1, but being *** short *** too often, regardless of my aim, kills me.

I average about 85 per round and can use improvement in all areas, but I feel I'd average 80, if I was a good, not an average putter

John, I never realized how critical the dominate eye position was to proper alignment when putting. I knew to swivel my head and not pick it back up once in position as it tends to cause poor alignment. Which is similar to a golf swing. I am going to reposition my dominate eye and hope for even better results. One other item is you may want to save these videos for week days as oppose to week-ends. I have a few buddies who run blogs on YouTube and the viewership is much lower on weekends vs weekdays. Keep up the good work, thank you!

I never trust my eyes to tell me where my putter face is aimed.
No matter how I try to position my eyes over the ball, my eyes always "see" that my putter face is aimed several inches left of where it is actually aimed.
So I use a line on the ball and aim that line at my target. I do this from behind the ball so I can use my binocular vision.
Then, when I get set up over the ball, I simply square my putter face to the line on the ball and totally disregard what my eyes tell me, because they NEVER tell me the truth. They always tell me I'm aimed left.
I used to think it was just me with this problem, but I've tested several friends.
I would aim the line on the ball dead center of the cup with the ball about 4 feet from the hole. I then asked friends to set up over the ball as if they were going to putt the ball.
I then ask them to tell me where the line on the ball is aimed.
So far, 4 out of 5 said just outside the left edge. Only 1 said dead center.
Don't trust your eyes to tell you where the putter is aimed. Trust the line that you carefully aimed from behind the ball. I also verify that the line is aimed where I think it is, by using the putter shaft as a straight edge, like Kevin Na does.
There is a correct and incorrect way to use the shaft so read up on it. I would go into it but this post is too long already.

This is actually pretty practical advice. If applied correctly you should save strokes each round.

To avoid parallax error when putting, your eyes must look straight out of your face.
In other words your pupils are looking out on a line that is basically perpendicular to your face.
Now keep that principle in mind when you are over your putt and looking down at your target line. Are you looking at the line with your eyes looking straight out of your face or are your eyes looking down your face to see the line?
If they are not looking straight out of your face at the line but instead looking down your face at the line, you are going to introduce parallex errors into the equation.
So when over a putt, look straight out of your face, then adjust your head up or down, until you are looking directly at your line.
This method works regardless of how far or close to the ball you stand.
Preferably though, it works best when your eyes are directly above the line.
Final note. When over your ball and gazing back and forth between ball and hole, turn your head perpendicularly around your neck so that your eyes stay parallel to the target line. Any head movement that throws your eyes off the parallel target line is bad news.

One instructor says to wiggle the putter on the back stroke and just hit towards your target. Crazy but it seems to work. The explanation is it keeps you from concentrating on your stroke mechanics. What are your thoughts?
