What is better, Spear or Halberd?

Spears have a lot of fans within the wider historical weapons enthusiast community, but at the same time this leaves a big question open: in the late middle ages, we see spears giving way to other polearms. Why did this happen? It has most likely a lot to with infantry getting access to better body armour, and as a result no longer need to keep one hand free to use a shield. This allowed them to use more potent weapons that require two hands, such as halberds and pikes. This sparring video shows the advantages of both these weapons against shorter spears.

Last time I went to the Renaissance Festival, they had a foam sword fighting ring. One of the guys running it actually complimented me on my use of a glaive, since I was using it as a stabbing AND chopping weapon. Most people apparently just stab. What I didn't tell him was I was using it like I would a Zweihander, since it was the only thing they had of comparable length lol

Advantage of halbert: more than just pointy end to hurt enemy with
Advantage of spear: less weight on one end, meaning slightly more reach at the same length

The Halberd guy should use it as a evolved spear like it is.

Depends on how well armored your opponents are. Against heavy plate you are going to want the Halberd for that bashing and spike. This is why you see the Halberd become a widely adopted primary weapon of armies as heavier armor was being worn. Its better when you might have to bash through heavy plate wearing opponents.

I expected pikes to work against armor, but not this well- especially outside of formation tactics

Well I mean here's where the "shot" compartment comes in.
The really high battlefield losses from the Renaissance onwards were caused by guns.

The real advantage of the spear is that it is easier to wield one-handed, an important consideration if your primary protection is a shield.

Would the ones with the spear benefit from shortening their grip on the weapon more? Not sure about what I was seeing but it looks like there was a lot of unwieldy length out for the halberd to play with once in close range

You didn’t play Fire Emblem. Axe beats Lance lol. Although, this is a long axe. I always figured axe beats lance because axes hook onto lance shafts. The pike vs halberd part does kind of disprove that, though, lol

You need to fight and equal foe....This was not a fair fight regardless of her skill she could never match your power and stamina.

If enough power is applied would the spear go through the armor or was armor just that thin back then
