Aluminum Welding Rods- Do they work?

This is beginner friendly aluminum welding! Aluminum welding rods like these Alumiweld Rods from Harbor Freight make welding aluminum without a Tig Welder or Mig Welder possible. This system is affordable and the process is simple. These aluminum welding rods make it possible to to braze weld aluminum easily braze weld aluminum just like I did in the video!

There are several brands of these aluminum welding rods but in this video I used the Alumiweld rods from Harbor Freight. The price for these aluminum rods is under $20 which makes them very affordable. Welding aluminum with these rods requires practice to be sure. I found that there are three key factors for success with brazing aluminum. The first is surface preparation. Sanding, wire brushing and a thorough cleaning with a solvent like acetone or alcohol is a critical foundation to the process. The second key is stabilizing the piece to be welded. Clamping and immobilizing the aluminum that you are working on will assist in heat flexing. The third factor that I found was temperature. The Alumiweld rods have a working temperature of 730° which oddly enough is the same max temperature of MAP gas. The max temperature of propane is about 600°, so I chose to use MAP. I found that evenly heating the parent metal along the entire length of the weld worked best for me. I also notice more success when I didn't "rush" the temperature/process.

Preparation is key with this process! From there a good clean braze weld is possible. Have you tried this technique? Leave a comment and let me know.⤵️

Nice video! It's great to learn about this option.
There is definitely a tendency to think we need to go straight to a fancy TIG machine for probably just a few little aluminum projects per year.

Gonna use this on a small aluminum two stroke engine to help seal the spark plug coils, previous owner tapped a new heli coil but screwed up the seal on that as well. Either going to drill out old coils and threads, add new material, drill a new shaft, and re tap. That seems to be a pretty intense repair, however longevity is the goal. The other option was to try to fill the seem between threads but that might be difficult since the gap is so small.

Im trying to repair an aluminum wheel hairline crack on the inside of the barrel. It had a slow leak. Do you think this would be strong enough to repair a 18 inch aliminum automobile wheel?
