This reminds me of when a German speaking friend started to really grasp humor in English. He always explained the joke after he'd finished laughing and it made it that much better.

I can tell most with full confidence that every German person I’ve ever met is so easily brought to laughter. I was hiking through Yosemite once, when a German tourist saw a chipmunk and thought it looked funny, so I joked about “chipmunks” and he just found the idea of a chip-monk so hilarious, he laughed about it the whole way back.
