Find the chord changes in the upper 3 strings is really a good tip, I usually disregard this step and end up doodling everywhere because I don't pay attention to underlying chords. Thanks Habibi

This is good in the idea that to improvise you may have worked out a basic lick or variation, and have a general goal of creating tension or release. That is not just random and good, there is a looseness and creativity, but also intent
