For quite some time, enthusiasts of cameras that use Medium Format have not had any new options to choose from. While Medium-format roll film is still obtainable from specialized stores and labs, it is not as widely available as other types of film. However, Pentax has announced plans to introduce the follow-up to their popular 645Z medium format camera. In this video, we will explore how Pentax can effectively carry out the development of this new medium format camera.

I'm curious what your source(s) is/are for this video claiming Pentax will come out with a successor to teh 645Z? Unless I missed something I'm not seeing it. Being quite involved in the world of photography this is the first I'm hearing of this, so I hope you don't mind me asking. I'm sure others are also very curious. I would be glad to hear Pentax coming out with a successor of course, however, they seem focused on the new film project, K3/III, and K1 II successor as of the time of this comment. They don't have a lot of resources so I'd be surprised to see them update the 645Z which is already a very fine camera and not out of date in the grand scheme of still imaging.

I can't wait for a new one. I have two 645Z's and love them. I have been shooting Pentax medium format film cameras for years, as well.

Weird ... almost every camera shown in this video was NOT a medium format camera. If Pentax created a new medium format camera ... I would definitely want it. They make great high quality gear.

Is it true? Or just a rumor? Been using Pentax 645z for 5 years, never thought to switch after that, still happy with image quality.

Hopefully their new '645' camera will have a sensor that is ACTUALLY 6x4.5 cm. Currently, nearly all digital medium format cameras have medium format's APSC equivalent sensor size, thus rendering a lot of medium format's benefits rather muted.

Great - I love the z. Maybe the old lenses could be "cropped sensor" lenses. Bring it on Pentax Get some of the new Z II's into good hands for scenic shooting and instructions.

Nice video! Yes, I am excited to see what Pentax will do. I currently use a Pentax K-1 and have done so for several years now. I love this camera, and I love Pentax lenses. Also, the K-1 was the camera that convinced me to 'switch' from film to DSLR. I do appreciate Pentax's commitment to its customer base, something which is increasingly rare among manufacturers nowadays. Cheers!

645 system had last relase over 6 years ago so we can safely consider it being dead in Rioch hands. Like they killed Q mount previously and also all compact cameras except GR.

Pentax 645z is discontinued, does this indicate that there is new one coming?

They could keep the flange length of the camera same as before and make it a mirrorless, or, they could have an adaptor and make it a mirrorless. Going back to mirror camera would be a disastrous business decision with a defunct future.

Interesting concept. I can't imagine they would sell that many. Even with what I would imagine to be a big price tag.

It is a great camera. The weight is in the lenses. When put side by side to mirrorless, you should add the several extra batteries needed to run the mirrorless as part of the total weight.

Pentax should go mirror-less with a special Pentax adapter to the existing lenses. Mirror-less is the future as it produces great results with manual lenses and reduces weight.

Actually I'm thinking about upgrading from a crop sensor K70 to full frame as soon as the K1iii is launched. However if this 645z successor is launched ahead of the K1iii I would probably upgrade my budget and get one. I take my photographs mostly in a low light, high contrast environment. The additional amount of detail, the additional dynamic range is unbelievable, even in the older 645z.

It's not true. Pentax has killed the 645 line.

Pentax 645 wasn’t a good experience .
Would love to see Pentax new model; don’t need mirrorless.

I think it’s more likely the medium format camera that will be released is a 67 film camera built with upgraded materials (cf plastic and magnesium alloy) to lower weight and cost.

Market is very narrow for Pentax, experience user nowadays would be more likely to spend a little more on Hassy X, young users rarely use Pentax 645z
