"The merchant is a retired level 20 wizard. He casts suggestion to make you shit yourself and then casts damnation to send you directly to hell."

Proper response: "You *try* to kill the merchant. It ends poorly for you because this is a magic items shop. And he has security."

A fellow party member attempted this. My character, an elf druid/bard, intervened by casting "hold person" on them before they attacked the merchant. The dm had that guy turned in to the town guard for attempted murder and as a reward for saving his life, the merchant gave me a health potion free of charge

“Whoops looks like that merchant was beloved by the townsfolk, have fun fighting an entire town and becoming enemies of the kingdom”

This is where all merchants who cater to adventurers turn out to be retired level 20 former adventurers themselves.

At this situation, I always tell my player: "You can feel a strong pressure from this merchant. He may be much, MUCH stronger than you, and is supported by some magic artifacts in this shop. Are you certain whatever you doing is worth it? "

"i kill the merchant"
"You TRY to kill the merchant.
Roll initiative"

Last time I played DnD, I warned the DM that one of the people in the group is a chaos gremlin whose joy is turning every campaign into a "villain PCs take over the world" campaign even if their party isn't evil. So the very first storefront was run by a retired level 20 wizard with Epic levels. It went exactly as expected.

you forgot the part where the player still believes he's a lawful good character.

“You think you are the first lowly adventurer to try that?”
A voice piped up from the same door you just entered. The corpse in front of you dissolves into inert, gray powder.
Roll initiative.

This sort of interaction should be the equivalent of trying to rob a gun store with a box cutter

"You want to kill the merchant? You can certainly try."

*starts rolling dice behind the DM screen*

"The player is always right-"
Time to bring the sage words, because that is a red flag

That’s why I always make sure that all merchants keep a couple of preloaded heavy crossbows under the table

Murderhobos don't just kill NPCs. They kill the entire vibe.

A player being a murder hobo is an opportunity to teach them about the consequences of their actions

This is how the players slowly begin to discover that EVERY single NPC is powerful enough to defeat the entire party and they're actually just being Truman-Showed for the amusement of a bored deity.

Bro I was in a campaign and our party was approached by an old woman giving out pastries. A party member flipped over the old woman's cart for no reason just cause he could. He also said that his character doesn't care. Everyone was mad at him for doing that.

A bad dm says no, a good dm makes sure he never askes that question again

have another merchant casually appear from the back and take his place. repeat until they get bored
