Dad used oil stones with pull the blade, flip, stroke away, stem to stern, back and forth until there was a certain gleam along the top edge.

About the edge leading vs trailing debate. It's a matter of personal experience. I know a few people that get amazing results with trailing. For me this way is harder to clean the burr, it tends to keep a microburr that you can't feel but will rip paper towel.

Best results I've seen with edge trailing were with about 40 degree high passes or a single 90 degree pass to clean burr and then a few alternating trailing strokes to make the edge finer. You need to know when to stop or a microburr will form again. I'm curious how he does tree topping on trailing, too bad didn't show the technique.

I have more experience with edge leading. To get good results edge leading you need well flattened stone or abrasive will impact on the edge. There is no need for high passes, just edge leading and low pressure gets amazing results. I can shave hair or cut paper towel on any stone, even 36 grit dressing stone.

I'm having a hard time with angles. The change from the flat of the babe to the angle of sharpness is so slight. How do you keep the angle as you work?
