It's no great secret that the milsurp market is absolutely chock full of reproduction or outright fake Mosin Nagant M91/30 PU sniper rifles, ones that are often being passed off as the real thing -- with the attendant prices. Today the Redneck Preppy gives you some things you can look out for when considering one of these rifles for purchase...or figuring out if you actually own the real thing.

There seems to be some contention about the front sight post section of the video. All of the research I've done supported what I said in the video but enough people are taking issue with it that it could be those sources were wrong. For now please ignore the part concerning the front sight post.

So your saying that there are PU Mosin Nagant’s and the rest of them are fakes. I hate to say it but there are not only two kinds of Mosin Nagant’s out there ! I’m not going to downplay someone’s gun just because it is not a PU. There are a lot of nice Mosin’s out there that were not ment to be a PU !

They are in demand, for good reason. Got my post refurb PU when they first got imported. Years later it has held up great.

Another point of interest is if your stock is correct. Does it have the proper sling mounts, and are the inspection stamps in the wood the correct stamps for the year and factory.

Mine is painted black and they don't make paint like that anymore not in a long time it's on thick and if you lay the rifle down it doesn't make much of a sound it's like a coating so you don't have the sounds of wood it like absorbes the sound it's a 1944 and been stamped many times

I got my Mosin Nagant M91/30 (stamped 1944) about 12 years ago for $89 dollars. I bought it from a gun store and it was in a box. The stock has the Russian mark on the stock as refurbished. What bothers me is it was advertised as an Ex-Sniper rifle. Box marked this way too. When the box was opened, the wood was beautiful. no scope, no mount looked just like a normal Mosin Nagant M91/30. Curious thing. Except when I asked why it was called an Ex-sniper rifle he showed me where the receiver had been drilled and tapped for scope mount and then plugged with screws and polished so well that from the outside of the receiver you could not see the screw holes. Inside they stood out, but they could be easily removed.
The serial number on the barrel matches the bolt, but not the bayonet. Most interestingly the bolt handle is straight not turned down like it's supposed to be on a PU- sniper. I though maybe the serial had been altered or it was re-barreled. Upon very close inspection this was not the case. Barrel markings were an arrow or a bow and arrow as well as the usual markings of proof test and all that.
*Over the years i discovered that a Russian sniper rifle had to meet or exceed a certain amount of Russian criteria for accuracy. If during its service it failed. It was declassified as a "ex-sniper" rifle but put back in military service. Ex-Sniper rifles they were still more accurate than most stock military rifles.* Did they make a new straight bolt for this rifle when it was declassified as a sniper rifle or was this one made with a straight handle for someone special? It makes sense that the bayonet serial does not match the rifle as PU-sniper rifles were never issued with bayonets. What does anyone think?

Shot 4 shells from my mk 91/30 and first she'll shot fine, but last three the shells exploded in the barrel. Any thoughts on this.

Но. Я против того, что этот карабин называют Наган. Это только Мосин, Наган никакого отношения не имеет к этому оружию, это абсолютно разные карабины. Ничего общего
