Game: Mega Man 9
Platform: Wii (WiiWare)
Completed: July 12, 2021
Rules: Beat the game as Proto Man

I just finished my first playthrough of Mega Man 9 (as Mega Man) and it was a lot of fun. The game offers "Hero" and "Superhero" modes for Mega Man which are basically a hard and very hard mode respectively. Before trying those I wanted to try Proto Man Mode, which only has one difficulty level. Proto Man is horrible. He has a slide and a charge shot, but can only have two "lemons" on the screen at once instead of Mega Man's three, he has no shop to buy items from, and his charge shot isn't really that powerful. Oh and he takes a crazy amount of damage because he's made of paper or something. Plus you get to listen to his awful whistle jingle every time you respawn. Want to use that shield of his? Go ahead...but only while jumping. All that being said, Proto Man Mode switches things up, offers a good challenge, and is still worth playing. Here are some highlights:

2 minutes, 9 seconds - This Swiss bank account number is a reference to when the first Mega Man game came out: 1987-DEC-17

4 minutes, 50 seconds - Even though you don't get it, the Book of Hairstyles is still on this screen and shows Mega Man's hair. This changes nothing.

37 minutes, 25 seconds - I find out here that you can actually use the shield, but only while jumping. Proto Man still sucks and smells like used oil.

1 hour, 1 minute - Galaxy Man's stage music forces you to dance by mashing the directional buttons rapidly. Then you get to wonder why Proto Man's cape blows in space.

1 hour, 29 minutes, 25 seconds - There's a bit of lag or something that happens every once in a while that eats your inputs when you're close to the edge of a platform. It's hard to describe unless you play it but was present in Mega Man 9 as well.

1 hour, 34 minutes, 5 seconds - It's a cool touch how if you get your toe really close to the lavafalls it causes sparks.

1 hour, 37 minutes, 5 seconds - The same laggy thing happened here that happened back in the previous stage.

1 hour, 42 minutes, 30 seconds - This was some respawn doodoo here. And then the edge-of-platform lag!

1 hour, 45 minutes - My endgame strategy was to grind Plug Man's stage for 9 energy tanks, save my game, and then give it a go. This time I knew that if you get part of the way through Wily's fortress and then go back to the stage select screen that all your Wily progress is lost. I learned that the hard way in my Mega Man playthough.

2 hours 35 seconds - I got some slowdown here because I was running this in the Dolphin emulator and for some reason my NZXT software that monitors usage on components crashed. This seems to happen often when that program is running and I'm using Dolphin but I didn't really learn that until it happened again in my next playthrough.

2 hours, 4 minutes, 30 seconds - Interesting that you can fire a shot into the boss room, but only if the room is empty.

2 hours, 13 minutes, 30 seconds - You can only have 9 energy tanks at once, just like your lives. Why is there a zero in front of it then? That implies that you can get double digits.

2 hours, 14 minutes, 30 seconds - You can leap forward into a boss room, but only if the boss has been defeated.

2 hours, 21 minutes, 45 seconds - I found a way to get damaged while using J. Satellite. Have an enemy spawn on you. Shortly after, this part gets really tough and doesn't let you know you can use the concrete weapon to change the beams into platforms. It's kind of crappy that your introduction to this mechanic is deep into a Wily level with one hit deaths.

2 hours, 27 minutes, 45 seconds - Finally a cool usage of Proto Man's shield! By accident, of course.

2 hours, 40 minutes, 50 seconds - This might be the worst placed enemy out of all of the Mega Man games I've played. There is no indication that he's there and it's an instant death.

2 hours, 46 minutes, 35 seconds - If you run out of concrete weapon energy here then you're screwed.

2 hours, 47 minutes, 35 seconds - Nice intense fight with Galaxy Man.

2 hours, 50 minutes, 45 seconds - Jewel Man is one of my favorite fights in this game. I like the strategy of manipulating his jumps by faking him out with yours.

2 hours, 56 minutes, 25 seconds - Only being able to have two shots on the screen at once opposed to Mega Man's three makes this fight against Wily much tougher. Fortunately other weapons absolutely destroy him.

3 hours, 1 minute, 10 seconds - If I would have ran out of energy tanks or died here, I probably would have had to farm for nine energy tanks and nine lives again and restarted all of the Wily stages. Eff that.

3 hours, 4 minutes, 40 seconds - I don't get why they ask you to save your game here. I did it when I beat the game for the first time and it seems like it just overwrites your data with a new game.

Well that was a thing. On to Mega Man "Superhero" mode.
