It doesn't matter so much what you learn to draw but how you learn to draw. In this video, I show you a technique for developing essential skills that can help you draw any subject you want.

"The point isn't to have a perfect frameable product each time you sit down to draw. It's to BE drawing, to be IN the process, to BE an artist, and to see the world like only an artist can." Yes! and Yes! Thank you Danny! 😃

As a bodybuilding hobbyist and former basketball player, this makes so much sense to me! I forget how physical art is, and that makes it sound more fun to me!

I loved that teacup exercise. I now draw the flowers (from my garden) every morning at about 6am because of what you wrote - they are always on the table, even when I am 6am sleepy and making my coffee. I am loosening up and growing. Yet another bit of Danny magic (n.b. - the drawings are not always lovely!)
We need a few more heroes like you, Danny. I am doing regular sketchy walks in France now with a really lovely lady who leads us to sketch in the streets- but I doubt I would have felt so courageous without you. Thanks (once again).

I am currently learning to draw landscapes. I came back from holiday with a phone full of wonderful photos that I want to paint. But when I sat down with my sketchbook and watercolors it all felt intimidating. So I took my journaling sketchbook and a ball point pen and started to draw a thumbnail sketch of the last photo in my phone. The next day I took my son's color pencils and did the same with the next picture. And I intend to carry on. It already feels les daunting.

I am just starting to draw, and I quickly came to the same realization that you are sharing. I'm drawing things repeatedly and making improvements every time. Also, drawing the item from different angles and with different light. At first it was with dread, but as I see improvement, I am getting excited about drawing.

this is exactly what I needed! I have so many ideas about what I want to draw, and I don't know where to start other than fumble my way through in the dark. This gives me a way of starting somewhere.

Its true I recently started blind contouring the same chair for days now and I can feel the benefits. My line feel more accurate to other subjects I'm drawing, even though at the time it felt boring and lame. And now I love it!

Indeed, repetition and perseverance are the most important recommendations!

I really like your approach to learning to draw. I never started drawing because I always thought that first I had to run through all that boring things like drawing shapes and doing other exercises. But your videos inspired me to just start and "be brave enough to be bad at something new". So thank you! 😊

Thanks for the video. I agree with this idea, last year I felt a good progress in my skills by drawing the same action poses I found in a book over and over again. Everytime I found new details and understand the same subject more. It never feel like doing the same thing because my view of the pose change with each drawing

Very Encouraging Danny. I am getting back into drawing and really needed to hear you say that repetition is more than ok . 😊

We learn and improve on any subject by doing.

Thank you, Danny. I apply your advice to my writing also: it's so important to make that another line, to write that another word, even if no one reads or appreciates it.

Oh wow, I just went to check the comments and there's none😂

What I try to do is draw whenever I have 10+ minutes of waiting time, I have this small sketchbook that fits in my pocket with my favourite pen attached, so I draw whenever I have a moment. I usually have to wait at least 10 minutes after work till my bus arrives so I just pick something interesting and draw it until I have to leave

Thanks to this one rule and the size of the sketchbook I've already filled it a 4th of the way, last sketchbook took me 2 years to finish

Edit: also if I'm really not feeling like drawing or I don't have time at all I do blind contour from the back of the sketchbook, another one of my rules is to draw something every day even if it's a scribble and putting it in the back makes it easier for me to not think that "I'll ruin my sketchbook" since I usually use those pages to test art supplies as well

Ive always been a David Bowie fan and I tried to draw the album cover to Hunky Dory once...it looked awful...I tried it again, and it looked better and the 3rd time was perfect...i absolutely agree that drawing the same thing is absolutely the way to go....im going to try a favourite building in town next....

I draw my drinks when I go to pubs. The last pint of beer is a lot looser and abstract than the first! 😁 🍻
