The Sun King: Louis XIV - Part 2

He brought France to its highest splendor and made it a beacon of science, culture, and arts. It is under his reign, the longest reign in history, that France became the greatest power in Europe and would come to dominate the continent for the whole century, a century Voltaire would describe as “Le Grand Siècle” – the Great Century. The face even of Absolutism, builder of Versailles, it is no surprise that you are known as The Sun King, Louis XIV.

I know that there's a lot of controversy over whether or not Louis XIV said "I am the State". I've used it in the thumbnail because it's very well-known, but intend to discuss the uncertainty around the origins of this quote in a later video.

Sorry the colours look a bit off - I've been having issues with desaturated colours while exporting from Premiere and this was my "fix". I hope to have it fixed by the next video. If anybody has any advice, please let me know.

Oh, and sorry I took almost a year to make this lmao

Love you all and merde!

Finally another video, it's a good thing all those months of no content were put to use to study Louis in depth. I also hope you put out more cooking videos, crepes turned out to be pretty easy to make

Louis XIV really created his personal hell at Versailles. His form of absolutism was not really suited for the long term as it required a strong King but as his successors proved, that will not always be the case. The nobility still had their privileges and reasserted themselves as soon as Louis XIV's body was cold during the Orleanist Regency. I really hope you cover the Orleanist Regency as well as Louis XV's reign(especially the issue of Parlements) as both are important for understanding the causes that led to Louis XVI and thus the French Revolution.

Barris, I know it’s been a minute, but I just wanted to say you’re awesome! Regardless of whether or not you ever return, I wish you all the best that life can offer! Happiness is key. p.s. if you’re currently working on a video, then I apologize for assuming otherwise.

J'ai un examen sur l'histoire de la France ce jeudi. Mater les vidéos est plus amusant et plus facile à mémoriser que bouquiner. Évidemment, ce canal est un bijou pour moi

Awesome video. I studied Louis XIV when I was in school, including Prince Eugene and Marlborough. One of my favourite subjects. Great to see you covering it :)

Great series! It’s so hard to find any documentary on Louis XIV in English that isn’t “oh look at Versailles! Big and pretty! Oh, Man in the Iron Mask, was it his twin brother?!”
Your efforts are much appreciated =)
