Masoud Pezeshkian Becomes Iran's New President, Defeats Khamenei Loyalist

Iran gets its new president after a run-off election. The country's only reformist candidate Masoud Pezeshkian has won the presidential race. Pezeshkian, a heart surgeon, has got 53.6% votes and defeated ultraconservative Saeed Jalili, a loyalist of Iranian supreme leader Khamenei. Pezeshkian’s victory has broken years of dominance by conservatives and ultraconservatives. He was backed by former presidents Mohammad Khatami and Hassan Rouhani. Pezeshkian is a critique of Iran’s mandatory hijab laws. He also criticised his predecessor Ebrahim Raisi’s govt for Mahsa Amini’s death. The 22-year-old died in police custody after detention for violating the hijab rule. During his campaign, Pezeshkian vowed to ease internet restrictions and involve more ethnic minorities in his government. He also called for reviving the nuclear accord in return for sanctions relief.

Will Iran`s foreign policy of giving or selling proxies missiles that get launched in the Red Sea hitting merchant ships change? Will missiles continue to fly into Israel that Iran`s friends seem to like to do?Will Iran continue to supply drones to Putin that he shoots off in Ukraine? Do they want to be friends with democracies and still do deals with N. Korean prez Kim?These are questions which have to be answered if this new president makes any difference at all.
